Local roundup: Delaware South makes finals in Philly

The Delaware South softball team is trying to win a regional softball title.

But first, the downstate all-stars had to prove they were the best team in the state.

Delaware South did just that, downing Delaware North, 12-7, on Wednesday evening to reach the Carpenter Cup finals at Philadelphia’s FDR Park.

Delaware South (4-1) will face Mid Penn in the championship game on a date TBA. Mid Penn handed the downstaters a 5-3, eight-inning loss earlier in the day on Wednesday.

The win over Delaware North was the fourth contest of the day for the 12-player Delaware South squad, which had a pair of games rained out on Tuesday.

Delaware South earned its appearance in the semifinals with a 13-7 win over Tri-Cape. That came after the downstaters finished pool play with the extra-inning loss to Mid-Penn.

Earlier in the day, Delaware South downed Jersey Shore, 20-0. Kandice Schlabach (Delmarva Christian) went 3-for-4 with a homerun while Josie Hollamon (Delmar) was 3-for-5 with a triple. Pitcher Kylee Hill (Laurel) earned the victory.

On Tuesday, Delaware South started its schedule with a 13-0 win over Chester County.

Since the high school all-star tourney started in 2005, Delaware South has won the Carpenter Cup title four times.

Golf

Brown wins Delaware Amateur: Michael Brown fired a final-round 65 — the low round of the tournament and a course record — to win the 70th annual DSGA Delaware Amateur on Wednesday.

Starting the day in eighth place, the 48-year-old from Maple Shade Township, N.J. carded scores of 67 and 65 to finish with an 11-under-par total of 273 in the 72-hole event at Newark Country Club. Brown finished four strokes ahead of second-place Duglass Ergood (277), who led after each of the first two rounds.

Carlo Pizzano and Ford Bennett tied for third at 278. Rij Patel (282) took fifth while Rehoboth Beach’s Jay Whitby (283) placed sixth. Whitby was the top finisher from Delaware as eight of the top 11 finishers live outside the state.

Brown, who won the Amateur for the first time, scored an eagle three on the fourth hole of his last round before adding four birdies on the back nine for his 65. There were three other rounds of 66 in the tourney before Brown came home with the 65.

In his final two rounds, Brown totaled nine birdies with no bogeys to come from behind and win the three-day event.

College athletics

DSU coaches on MEAC ballot: Former Delaware State coaches Bill Collick, Mary “Honey” Lamb-Bowman and Joe Burden are on the ballot for the MEAC’s Legends of Coaching honor.

Fans can vote for the award, which is part of the league’s celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Burden led DSU men’s track and field teams to a total of six MEAC championships in the 1980s and 90s. Collick, who was second in league history with 48 MEAC wins when he stepped down in 1996, won or shared MEAC titles in 1985, ‘87’, ‘88, ‘89 and ‘91.

Lamb-Bowman led the Hornets to the MEAC volleyball championship in the team’s first season in 1986.
