Local roundup: Cape girls pull away to win over Seahawks

Cape Henlopen High was able to pull away after a tight start to the game to post a 17-10 victory over Sussex Academy in a Henlopen Conference girls’ lacrosse showdown on Friday evening.

The Seahawks did lead after netting the contest’s first goal and still trailed only 8-6 later in the first half. But the Vikings reeled off three straight goals to take an 11-6 halftime lead.

The win was the eighth in a row for Cape (10-1), which hasn’t lost to a Delaware school since 2009. Emily Monigle scored six goals with Ella Rishko (2 assists) adding five for the Vikings, who got six saves from Destiny Kusen.

Madison Leeper scored a team-high four goals for Sussex Academy (9-1), which got 14 saves from Peyton Hagy.

The 10 goals matched the most scored by an in-state program against the Vikings this season. Ursuline also tallied 10 goals in an 11-10 loss on April 19.

Milford 14, Lake Forest 9: Eighth-grader Hannah Zimmerman netted seven goals as the Buccaneers (3-6) picked up their third victory.

Marlie McMillan made three saves for Milford, which out-shot the Spartans, 21-15.

Emma Massey scored five goals for Lake Forest with Parker Robbins adding three goals and an assist. Giulia Sweet made four saves.

Indian River 13, Hodgson 8: The Indians went up 8-4 at halftime before earning the win.

St. Mark’s 12, Polytech 8: Claire Fuchs netted three goals and Madison Todd added two for the Panthers, who fell behind 7-2 at halftime.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 14, Brandywine 1: The Eagles raised their record to 7-5 after posting their third win in a row.

Dover 10, Middletown 8: The Senators picked up their fourth win in the last five games to improve to 6-5.

Cape Henlopen 18, Sussex Central 0: Jake Truitt netted three goals and an assist for the Vikings, who scored 11 first-quarter goals in the North win. Eleven players scored for Cape.

Archmere 15, Caesar Rodney 4: The Auks led only 2-0 before out-scoring the Riders, 6-2, in the second quarter to take control.

Ryan Carey scored twice for CR with Patrick Craig and Kevin Hudson adding the other goals. Dylan Bennett and Benjamin Dawson combined for seven saves.

Baseball

Sussex Central 18, Laurel 1: Brendan Anderson had six RBI while Chase Boyle went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a homer to power the Golden Knights to the victory.

Royce Scotton, Damin Smith and William Lloyd had the Bulldogs’ hits.

Smyrna 2, Lake Forest 1: Winning pitcher Shawn Mannering singled home Dalton Leager with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the Eagles.

Pitcher Quinton Maris allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts in six innings for the Spartans, who tied the game with a run in the fifth. Adam Schiff had two hits.

Sussex Central 21, Milford 2: Brendan Anderson (homer, 4 RBI) had three of the Golden Knights’ 20 hits in their Henlopen North win on Thursday.

Six other players had two hits apiece for Central, which broke the game open with nine runs in the third. Chase Boyle, who had two hits, threw a five-inning four-hitter with six strikeouts.

Thomas Leighty and Aydin Zimmerman had two hits each for Milford.

Sussex Tech 10, Indian River 2: The Ravens hit three homeruns, including a grand slam from Connor Ellingsworth, in the Thursday win.

Jonathan Stokley, who doubled, and Jason Shockley (2 RBI) also hit homers while winning pitcher Grant Allen (2-for-3, runs) struck out 10. The contest was a matchup of the Henlopen Conference’s two division leaders.

Tyler Bowen homered for the Indians while Derek Bellmare added two hits.

Delmarva Christian 19, Holly Grove Christian 4: Carter Breasure hit a three-run homer to spark the Royals.

Softball

Smyrna 3, Lake Forest 1: Payton Dixon pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and also homered to spark a three-run sixth for the Eagles.

Dixon, Makayla Brantley (1 RBI, 1 run) and Kirsten Johnson all had two hits for Smyrna.

Jessica Reed scored for the Spartans in the fourth.

Dover 14, Woodbridge 4: Chelsea John and Emma Crowe had four hits apiece with Jamie Chandler and Alayna Gigliotti adding three hits each for the Senators.

Winning pitcher Lexi Dowdy struck out five as Dover (6-8) won its third in a row.

Kamryn Spence had a triple for Woodbridge.

Delmarva Christian 14, Salisbury Christian 0: The Royals had 10 extra-base hits among their 18 total hits on Thursday. Grace Fetterman had a double, triple and homerun.

Milford 23, Early College 3: Khyliah Reynolds picked up her first win of the season after striking out five in the first two innings.

The Hornets got a homer and triple from Sydney Johnes.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Brandywine 0: The Indians improved to 8-1 with the 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 victory.

College lacrosse

MEN, Delaware 9, Massachusetts 6: The Blue Hens (10-2, 7-1 CAA) not only became the outright CAA regular-season champs for the first time in program history, but they also set the CAA record for the most conference wins in a season with seven.

Delaware will be the top seed in the CAA Tournament which starts on Thursday in Hempstead, N.Y.

Trailing 6-5 at halftime, the Hens held the Minutemen (4-5, 4-4 CAA) scoreless for the final 39:40. Matt Kilkeary recorded 13 saves with eight in the second half.

Mike Robinson paced the UD offensive attack with a game-high three goals, while Cam Acchione and Mark Bieda each put in two.
College field hockey

Northwestern 4, Delaware 1: The Wildcats scored a pair of third-quarter goals to take control before downing the Blue Hens in the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament at North Carolina.

Northwestern led 4-0 before Delaware (6-4) got its only goal, from Grace Hoepfner, with only 6:14 remaining.

Junior goalkeeper Lizzie Gaebel had four saves as the Wildcats out-shot Delaware, 14-10. The Hens are now 8-10 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

College baseball

Delaware State 8, Coppin State 7: A two-out, two-run homer by Miguel Rivera (Polytech) in the bottom of the 10th gave the Hornets the walk-off MEAC win.

Mark Herron (3 hits) scored ahead of Rivera, who had a pair of hits and scored three runs for DelState (11-9 MEAC, 13-17 overall). The Eagles scored a run in the top of the 10th to take a 7-6 lead.

Cole Garey (Polytech) added two hits and an RBI with Mark Herron collecting three hits.

Hofstra 14, Delaware 11: With the Hens leading 9-5, the Pride scored nine runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the CAA victory.

Eric Ludman singled home a pair of runs for Delaware before Aidan Kane blasted a three-run homer.

College softball

Wesley earns sweep: Wesley College improved to 17-5 with a 9-1, 13-5 sweep of Gwynedd-Mercy.
