Posted

Canal broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the fifth inning and eight more in the sixth to hand Washington, D.C. a 14-1 loss in the Little League Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional on Wednesday afternoon.

The decisive victory moves the Delaware state champions one step closer to the regional finals in the six-team tournament being played in Bristol, Conn.

Canal (2-1) is now one of three teams left in the bracket. It plays again on Friday at 7 p.m. against the loser of Thursday’s matchup between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The regional title game is slated for Saturday, with both finalists earning a spot in the Little League World Series under this year’s format.

In Wednesday’s win, Canal out-hit Washington 19-3. Aiden Collie went 3-for-4, including a grand slam, with two runs scored and six RBI.

Julian Onley (3 runs, 1 RBI) and Fenix Loloff (3 RBI, 1 run) also had three hits apiece as nine different players had a hit for Canal.

Carter Schurman allowed only three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in five innings for Canal. Tristin Marley struck out the side in the sixth.

College volleyball

DSU picked third in MEAC: Delaware State middle blocker Sydney Lewis and outside hitter Valeria Otero were named to the preseason All-MEAC volleyball team, while the Hornets were picked to finish third in the eight-team league.

Delaware State received 99 total points and one first-place vote in the poll, just behind Howard which tallied 100 points and three first-place votes.

Coppin State, the spring MEAC North champ, is the pick to win the fall race with eight first-place votes and 115 total points.

Lewis was a spring All-MEAC first-team and MEAC All-Tournament selection. She was No. 1 in the conference with a .395 hitting percentage (101 kills/24 errors/195 att) and No. 2 in the league in blocks at 1.08 per set.

Otero was a spring All-MEAC Second Team and MEAC All-Rookie selection. She was DSU’s spring leader and fourth in the MEAC in kills at 3.17 per set (184 total).

The Hornets return all of their major contributors from the spring squad, which made DSU’s first MEAC Tournament appearance since 2010.

College football

CAA sets COVID forfeit policy: The CAA announced a new policy relating to football games that are unable to be played due to COVID-related protocols during the 2021 season.

The policy for the league, which includes Delaware, states that any game that cannot be played due to COVID-related circumstances will be considered a forfeit by the canceling team. The canceling team would receive a loss in the conference standings and the opposing team would be awarded a victory.

But the overall record of both teams would not change since NCAA bylaws consider such games a “no contest”.

The new policy does provide a 24-hour window of opportunity for making up the game, but if it cannot be conducted the next day, it would be considered a forfeit. If both teams are unable to play due to COVID-related circumstances, the game would be declared a “no contest” and would not be part of the record of either team.

College lacrosse

A 2017 graduate of Fairfield University, Smith played four years for the Stags as a midfielder.
