Canal rolled to an 18-1 victory over Lewes-Rehoboth as the Major League baseball state tournament got underway on Wednesday evening.

District II champion Canal will take on District I winner and host Camden-Wyoming on Thursday at 7 p.m.

District III champion Lewes-Rehoboth will face the loser of that contest on Friday.

At stake in the three-team, double-elimination tourney is a berth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Naamans 14, Laurel-Nanticoke-Woodbridge 2: The District II champions reached the state finals with the win on Wednesday night.

Camden-Wyoming and Naamans will meet for the title on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Georgetown. Naamans needs a win to force a second game for the championship on Friday.

8-10 State Tournament

Naamans 12, Lewes-Rehoboth 7: The District II champions advanced to the state finals with the victory on Wednesday.

Naamans will host District I champion M.O.T. today at 7 p.m. in the title game. Naamans needs to win to force a second championship game on Friday.

M.O.T. 11, Naamans 7: M.O.T. advanced to the state finals with the victory on Tuesday night.

The Middletown-area squad plays again on Thursday at 7 p.m. against either host Naamans or Lewes-Rehoboth.

M.O.T. (2-0) had 11 hits in Tuesday’s win, as Nate Collins went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Ayden Markiewicz (2 hits, 3 RBI) and Kevin Koerner and Charlie Koch with two RBI apiece also led the way.

Paul Doherty pitched four 2/3 innings, allowing six hits with three strikeouts.

Eastern Regional

Lower Sussex falls short: Lower Sussex was eliminated from the Eastern Regional on Wednesday afternoon but not before the Delaware state champions were one of only three squads remaining from what was a 10-team field.

New Jersey ousted Lower Sussex, 8-0, in the losers’ bracket finals of the tourney being played in Bristol, Conn.

New York and New Jersey will square off in the Eastern finals on Thursday for the right to play in the World series in Greenville, N.C.

Earlier in the day, Lower Sussex topped Delmar, Md., 4-0, for its fourth straight win in the tournament.

Cierra Lewis pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and only one walk to earn the win. Autumn Wille drove in three runs with Taygan Conaway picking up the other RBI for Lower Sussex, which scored twice in both the second and sixth innings.

Baylie Williamson reached base three times on a hit and two walks while scoring a pair of runs.

Both losses for Lower Sussex (4-2) were shutout losses to New Jersey. Williamson had two of three hits for Lower Sussex with Lewis adding the other.

Lewis also struck out five in the finale.

College track & field

UD coach McFarlane steps down: Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak announced on Wednesday that Wendy McFarlane has resigned from her position as the head coach of the Blue Hens’ women’s track & field team.

No reason was given for her resignation.

McFarlane became UD’s head coach in August 2008. Delaware won the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship in 2014 and 2019, leading to CAA Coach of the Year honors for McFarlane.

The Hens recorded a total of four top-three team finishes in the CAA under her guidance.

McFarlane also coached three Outstanding Track Meet Performers, three Outstanding Field Meet Performers, and one CAA Rookie of the Year.
