Canal blanked Camden-Wyoming, 4-0, on Saturday evening to wrap up the state championship in Major League baseball.

The District II champions went 3-0 in the tournament to earn a berth in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bristol, Conn.

Canal shut out District I champion Camden-Wyoming twice in the tourney but scored a total of only six runs itself in the two games. Canal allowed only one run in its three state tourney games altogether.

Major League is the only Little League age division that is playing regionals this summer. Canal will be trying to become just the third Delaware team to reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Special Olympics

Camps set for Camp Barnes: Special Olympics Delaware is hosting its annual summer camps on August 7-9 and 15-17 at Camp Barnes in Frankford.

Forty athletes and dozens of counselors are attending as the organization celebrates its 20th summer of offering the traditional camp experience.

Summer camp is one of the most anticipated events of the year for Special Olympics athletes of various ages and abilities. Campers participate in several traditional camp activities while enjoying the opportunity to reacquaint with and meet new friends during the three-day, two-night camp experience.

“Special Olympics summer camp is three amazing days where our counselors interact with Special Olympics athletes in an inclusive setting to enjoy a traditional camp experience together,” said Kylie Frazer, director of sports. “The counselors develop a greater understanding and appreciation of their peers with disabilities, and it serves as a tremendous lesson that all people are more alike than different.

“There’s no greater tribute to our athletes than the fact that many of our counselors come back year after year to spend the three days at camp with them.”

UD men set CAA slate: The Delaware men’s basketball team learned its dates for conference opponents as the Colonial Athletic Association announced its 2021-22 league schedule.

The Blue Hens open their CAA slate with a road trip at UNCW (Dec. 29) and Charleston (Dec. 31). Delaware then plays its league home opener vs. James Madison (Jan. 3) before welcoming Towson (Jan.5) to the Bob Carpenter Center.

Additional CAA home games include William & Mary (Jan. 20), Elon (Jan. 22), Drexel (Feb. 5), Northeastern (Feb. 10), Hofstra (Feb. 12), Charleston (Feb. 24) and UNCW (Feb. 26).

The CAA’s 10 teams will return to a traditional conference scheduling model this winter with an 18-game schedule, travel partners, and double round-robin format.

The conference slate will feature eight game dates from Dec. 29-Jan. 17. The stretch wraps up with all 10 teams competing for the first time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, providing each institution with the opportunity to promote its initiatives that focus on eliminating racial and social injustice.

The final six weekends of CAA play will follow a traditional Thursday-Saturday schedule with the regular season concluding Saturday, Feb. 26.

The CAA Men’s Basketball Championship will return to the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, D.C., in 2022, on March 5-8 in the nation’s capital.

Delaware returns its entire roster from last year, including starting guards Kevin Anderson and Ryan Allen along with first team All-CAA forward Dylan Painter.
