Five players scored in double figures to pace Caesar Rodney High to an 86-68 victory over Milford in the Riders’ boys’ basketball season opener on Tuesday evening.

CR outscored the Buccaneers, 23-12, in the fourth quarter to close out the Henlopen North win.

Anthony Aglio and Malachi Brinkley netted 17 points apiece for CR. Trey Voshell (15), Mekhi Tribbett (12) and Craig Williams (10) also reached double digits.

Aglio and Voshell each sank three of the Riders’ nine total three-pointers. Voshell also had nine assists and four steals.

Andrew Kravitz finished with a game-high 27 points for Milford with Ethan Wilkins scoring 10.

Christiana 67, First State Military 40: The Vikings downed the Bulldogs in a nonconference contest.

Football

Cavs’ Davis wins Gatorade award: Middletown High senior quarterback Braden Davis has been named the Gatorade Delaware Football Player of the Year. He is the third Middletown player to win the award.

The 6-foot-5, 195-pound senior quarterback had led the Cavaliers to a 9-1 record and the finals of the Class 3A state tournament. A second-team pick on the all-Class 3A team, Davis completed 114 of 156 passes for 1,872 yards and 20 touchdowns through nine games, with just three interceptions.

He also rushed for 638 yards and three scores on 46 carries. Davis was named the Class 3A, District I Offensive Player of the Year.

Davis has volunteered locally on behalf of Stockings for Soldiers and Habitat for Humanity.

“Braden Davis is a very talented kid with great size,” said St. Georges’ coach John Wilson. “He has a strong arm and a real presence on the field. He’s accurate and can make some really pretty throws.”

Davis has maintained a weighted 4.17 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at South Carolina next fall.

Wrestling

Cape van in minor accident: A van carrying members of the Cape Henlopen High wrestling team was involved in a minor accident while returning from a tournament in South Carolina last weekend.

According to a school district press release, the van was carrying seven students and a coach. It was hit by a car that ran a red light.

The release said that the eight were taken to nearby hospitals, treated for injuries and released.

“We are both grateful and fortunate that the everyone was okay and safely reunited with their families,” the press release concluded.

The Vikings were competing in The Southern Slam tournament at Eastside High in South Carolina.

Indian River 47, Dover 35: James Esque (138 pounds), Bryce Rickbaugh (160), Caleb McCabe (182) and T.J. Burke (285) all had pins for the Indians in their win on Monday.

Winning by fall for the Senators were Josiah Cody (106), Joseph Jackson (113), Dashuan Cole (126), John Parker (145), Antwan Eloi (195) and Connor Ridgway (220).

Girls’ basketball

Cape Henlopen 60, Dover 38: The Vikings opened up 51-25 lead after three quarters before posting the Henlopen North win.

Morgan Mahoney (9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals) tallied 19 points with Mehkia Applewhite (5 rebounds, 4 steals) adding 14 for Cape.

Lake Forest 46, Indian River 11: The Spartans started the game on a 22-2 run before earning the Henlopen South win.

Kirja Hickman netted 14 points with Gabrielle Almonte adding 12 for Lake Forest (2-0).

Caesar Rodney 51, Milford 10: The Riders led 33-2 by halftime in the Henlopen North matchup.

Stacey Deputy had a game-high 10 points as 10 CR players scored in the contest.

Sussex Tech 54, Polytech 51: The Ravens outscored the Panthers, 12-9, in double overtime to pull out the Henlopen North win.

Maleyah Bell scored a game-high 26 points for Sussex Tech while Akira Perry added 12.

The Panthers rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation with Kallie Hopkins’ three-pointer at the buzzer forcing the first OT. Hopkins (10 points) then sank a pair of foul shots with 4.9 seconds remaining to force the second OT.

Anjae Sorrell scored a team-high 21 points for Polytech.

Seaford 52, Laurel 47: The Blue Jays downed the Bulldogs in a Henlopen South matchup.

Christiana 37, First State Military 36: The Vikings outscored the Bulldogs, 8-7, in overtime to take the victory.

Freshman Carrina Keys netted 19 points for FSMA while Kyndall Wyngaard added 13.

Delmarva Christian 64, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 24: Ainsley Bell collected 21 points, eight assists and four steals to pace the Royals on Monday.

Kayla Mitchell picked up her second straight double-double by tallying 17 points and 15 steals while Sierra Troyer added 17 points and six steals.

Unified football

Dover, Smyrna make finals: Dover and Smyrna will square off in the finals of the DIAA Unified football state tournament on Saturday.

The contest is slated for 1:30 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.

Smyrna beat Caesar Rodney, 50-27, in the semifinals on Tuesday. Defending state champion Dover will be playing in the finals for the second straight year after beating Newark Charter, 60-47, in the other semifinal.

College football

UD kicker transferring to Final Four school: Ryan Coe, who spent the last three seasons kicking for the Delaware football team, announced that he’s transferring to Cincinnati.

The Bearcats are one of the four teams competing in this year’s FBS football playoffs.

Coe is known for his strong leg, booting field goals of 54 and 53 yards during his Delaware career. He was 26-for-34 on field-goal attempts and 47-of-47 on PATs over the last two seasons.

“Please respect my decision,” Coe wrote on Twitter. “I believe this is a necessary step for me to achieve my personal and athletic goals by leaving my Blue Hen family behind is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made.”

Women's basketball

SMU 61, Delaware 55: The Mustangs overcame a two-point deficit before topping the Blue Hens (6-3).

Ty Battle scored 17 points for Delaware with Tyi Skinner adding 16. SMU limited the Hens’ Jasmine Dickey to only seven points on 3-of-12 shooting in 28 minutes.

Fairleigh Dickinson 71, Delaware State 45: In a contest that was tied 5-5 after the first quarter, the Knights pulled away to the non-conference victory.

Joy Watkins netted a team-high 12 points for the Hornets (0-7) while Alexis Moragne added 10. Unique Miller pulled down 18 rebounds to go with six points.
