Local roundup: Brengle falls in Wimbledon third round

Posted

Madison Brengle’s Wimbledon run came to an end on Friday morning.

The 31-year-old from Dover fell to Viktorija Golubic, 6-2, 6-1, in the third round of the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon.

Brengle, ranked 82nd in the world, was trying to reach the fourth round of the Grand Slam tennis event for the first time in her career.

Unlike Brengle’s previous two opponents, the 66th-ranked Golubic played relatively mistake-free tennis. She committed only 24 unforced errors in the match with Brengle making 19.

In the first set, Brengle led 2-1 before Golubic won seven straight games to take control of the match. This is the farthest the 28-year-old Golubic has gotten at Wimbledeon.

The match lasted only an hour and six minutes with Golubic winning 69 points to 47 for Brengle. Golubic had just two aces but had no double faults.

Brengle has reached the fourth round in a Grand Slam tournament just once in her career, making the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2015.

WNBA

Smyrna’s Laney an all-star: Former Smyrna High basketball star Betnijah Laney has made the WNBA All-Star Game for the first time in her pro career.

The 27-year-old Laney, who now plays for the New York Liberty, has been in the league since 2015.

“We couldn’t be more excited to hear that Betnijah has been selected to join her first WNBA All-Star team,” Liberty coach Walt Hopkins said in a press release. “In only a few short months in New York — by way of her tireless work ethic, selfless leadership, and indomitable will to improve and to do whatever the team needs in order to win — B has already made an indelible mark on our organization.

“You’d be hard pressed to find a player more deserving of this honor, and we’re certain that this is only the first of many such accomplishments to come.”

After recovering from a serious knee injury early in her pro career, Laney was named the WNBA’s Most Improved Player as well as making first-team All-Defense with Atlanta a year ago.

This season she’s averaging a career-high 19.2 points per game along with 5.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds. Laney has netted at least 20 points in 11 of the Liberty’s 17 games, including a team-record streak of eight straight to start the season.

The WNBA All-Star Game will be played in Las Vegas on July 14.
