Local roundup: Brengle falls in final round of U.S. Open qualifying

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — For the first time since 2014, Madison Brengle will not be playing in a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

The Dover native fell to Anna Kalinskaya in the final round of US Open qualifying on Friday afternoon. Kalinskaya of Russia won in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

Brengle had participated in 16-straight Grand Slam events. The last time she missed out on a major was Wimbledon in 2014.

Brengle failed to hold serve at all in the first set against Kalinskaya. She did not hold until the third game of the second set and only could hold serve twice in the entire contest.

College field hockey

Delaware 3, Ohio State 2: Freshman Pia Freudenberger’s first career goal came at the right time as the rookie tallied the game-winner in Friday’s 3-2 season-opening victory at No. 24 Ohio State.

Tied at 2-2 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, the forward collected the deflection from senior Greta Nauck in front of the cage to bring home the win for the No. 9 Blue Hens.

Freudenberger added an assist to lead the Hens (1-0) with three points.

Seniors Michaela Scanlon and Lisa Giezeman posted back-to-back goals for Delaware to kick off the 2018 campaign.

Fellow senior Sydney Rhodes collected three saves in 70 minutes.

College volleyball

Delaware 3, Morgan State 0: The Blue Hens won 25-10, 25-22, 25-17 in their season opener.

Cailey Bracken and Brooke Robertson each slammed 12 kills to pace Delaware, whileMaria Bellinger added 10 on the night. Julia Hayes contributed eight kills and no errors for a .615 attack percentage, while Courtnie Roberts handed out 41 assists. UD recorded a .304 team attack percentage on the night while holding the Bears to a .137 percentage.

Andie Hanus posted a match-high 17 digs for the Blue Hens, while Bracken added 14 and Roberts had 11 as both players finished with double-doubles.

Missouri 3, Delaware State 0: The Hornets dropped their first match at a tournament hosted by James Madison, 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.

Mayah Ngundam and Caroline Rakoski led the Hornets with five kills each. Sydney Sheppard had a team-high 10 assists, while Mia Taula led all players with 12 digs for DSU.
