Local roundup: Blue Hen football game at New Hampshire postponed by COVID

Posted

After a smooth start to the spring season, the Delaware football team has hit its first big bump in the road.

The Blue Hens’ CAA game at New Hampshire on Saturday has been postponed because of COVID protocols within the Wildcats’ program.

Delaware looked into scheduling another game on Saturday but couldn’t find another opponent. The Hens don’t haven’t any open dates in what is now a six-game spring schedule.

The Hens (2-0) are ranked No. 12 in the country in NCAA Division FCS while the Wildcats (0-1) are No. 20. Delaware’s next game is now slated for March 27 at Rhode Island.

The pandemic has caused other FCS games to be postponed this spring. No. 1-ranked James Madison has had its last two CAA games canceled by COVID protocols.

DSU to face St. Francis in ‘24: Delaware State will renew its football rivalry with St. Francis (Pa.) in the 2024 season.

The Hornets and Red Flash recently signed a two-year, home-and-home agreement to meet in the ‘24 and 2025 seasons.

Delaware State and St. Francis have had three previous meetings. The Hornets won the first contest 62-28 in 2006 in Dover, Del. The Red Flash came out on top in the last two, winning 45-14 at home in 2018 and topping the Hornets 35-21 at DSU in the 2019 campaign.

Women’s soccer

Marymount 1, Wesley 0: Sita Nair’s overtime goal lifted the Saints to the win at Drass Field.

Wolverine goalies Kiyanna Gill and Marissa Waters combined to make seven saves.

Wesley (0-1) is slated to play six more games this spring in the program’s final season.

Women’s lacrosse

St. Joseph’s 19, Delaware 6: The Blue Hens fell to 1-4 with the non-conference road loss while the Hawks improved to 3-3.

Sophomore attack Lizzie Hsu led Delaware with a pair of goals and an assist in her first appearance of the season.

Sophomore Mae Dickens, freshman Kellie Ann Matey, and juniors Danika Swech and Meghan Johnson each found the net for the Blue Hens as well, while junior Kendra Schweizer tallied an assist.

Saint Joseph’s led 12-2 at halftime, but the Hens opened the second half with two quick goals from Hsu and Johnson within just over two minutes. The Hawks closed the game on a 4-2 run to seal the win.

Baseball

Hornets’ schedule changed: The forecast for inclement weather later this week has prompted a change in the schedule for Delaware State’s weekend series against Coppin State.

The Hornets and Eagles are now scheduled to play seven-inning doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at DSU’s Soldier Field. The teams were originally scheduled to open the series with a single game on Friday.

Delaware State is scheduled to meet fellow MEAC North members Coppin State and Norfolk State 12 times each, while taking on North Carolina Central of the MEAC South eight times in this pandemic-shortened season.

Volleyball

DSU to play for MEAC lead: First place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division will be on the line when Delaware State squares off in two matches with Coppin State.

The Hornets will host the Eagles today at Memorial Hall before the two teams meet again on Friday at CSU’s Physical Education Center.

Coppin State currently leads the division with a 5-1 record (6-4 overall), while the Hornets are in second place at 3-1 (7-2 overall).

Delaware State has won its last three matches, each by shutout, since a 3-0 loss to the Eagles when the teams met the first time this season at Coppin State on March 8. The Eagles bring a five-match winning streak into Thursday’s contest.
