The Delaware baseball team capped off a series victory in style Sunday afternoon, erasing a four-run, eighth-inning deficit to defeat Elon, 6-5, in 10 innings at Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens (9-9 CAA, 25-22 overall), who trailed 5-1 with two outs in the eighth, scored five times over their last 13 at-bats to pull out the win.

In the 10th, Dover High grad Jordan Hutchins took the first pitch he saw and crushed a double off the fence in left. Erik Bowren then singled to advance Hutchins to third base befeore pinch-hitter Austin Niggebrugge singled past the drawn-in infield to give the Hens the win.

Delaware tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth when Tyler Callender roped a two-run single into left-center.

The victory extends the Hens’ lead to three games over James Madison for the sixth and final spot in the CAA Tournament. The Hens holds the tiebreaker over the Dukes, by virtue of Delaware’s series victory in April.

DSU to miss MEAC tourney: Delaware State baseball team will not compete in this year’s MEAC Tournament after dropping a doubleheader to Maryland-Eastern Shore, 8-3 and 5-1 on Saturday.

The Hawks swept the three-game series to earn the third MEAC North seed in the upcoming tournament. The top three seeds in the MEAC Northern and Southern divisions qualify for the post-season tourney.

In the seven-inning nightcap, MDES broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth inning. Dover High grad Avery Tunnell had a two-run double to later in the inning to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.

Jared Gillis (Smyrna) and Adrian Hill (Polytech) had two hits each for the Hornets. Hill also drove in a run, while Cole Garey (Polytech) and Maurice Parsons also knocked in runs for DSU.

College track & field

Wesley men second at CACs: The Wesley College men’s track & field team placed second at the Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

Wesley swept the sprint events and the relays to finish with 143 points. Christopher Newport won the team title with 191.50 points. Wesley’s second-place finish is the highest in program history.

The Wesley women’s team took fifth at the CAC meet with 94 points. Christopher Newport won the CAC title with 144 points.

Hens fourth at CAAs: Delaware’s women took fourth at the CAA championships on Saturday.

Freshman Myrissa McFolling-Young, from Smyrna High, broke the school record in the shot put en route to a fifth-place finish (47’ 9”). She followed that up with two more points in the discus (142’ 9”) in her first CAA championships appearance.
