Local high school roundup: 25 Henlopen Conference wrestlers earn state semifinals

Posted

LEWES — Another 12 Henlopen Conference wrestlers — including six from host Cape Henlopen High — advanced to the DIAA wrestling state semifinals after the second day of the individual tournament on Sunday.

The Henlopen will have a total of 25 competitors in the state semis, which are slated for Wednesday at Cape Henlopen. The tourney will conclude with both the semifinals and finals on Wednesday.

The preliminary rounds of the event were held over two days this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Sunday’s rounds included competition in weight classes 152 to 285 pounds.

In the team standings, Caravel continues to lead with 164 points while second-place Salesianum has 145. The next five schools are all from the Henlopen Conference: 3-Caesar Rodney (137.5), 4-Cape Henlopen (132.5), 5-Smyrna (119.0), 6-Milford (117.5) and 7-Sussex Central (111.0).

Cape Henlopen had a big day on Sunday, advancing all but one wrestler in the seven upper weights. Charles Fritchman (152), Carson Kammerer (160), Dalton Deevey (182), Jackson Handlin (195), Alex Taylor (220) and Lucas Ruppert (285) all won their quarterfinal matches.

Handlin won by pin in 2:42. That gives the Vikings a total of eight wrestlers in Wednesday’s semifinals, the most of any downstate school.

Smyrna was the only other Henlopen Conference team to have multiple winners on Sunday. Joseph Natarcola (160) and Nathan Lesniczak (170) both won to give the Eagles four semifinalists.

Natarcola advanced with a quarterfinal pin in 2:45.

Other Henlopen winners on Sunday included Milford’s Tim O’Hara (152), Sussex Central’s Josh Negron (182), Laurel’s Jacob Davis (195) and CR’s Kevin Hudson (285). Hudson advanced with a 57-second pin.

Milford has five wrestlers in the semis while Central has three.

Smyrna’s Natarcola and Gabe Giampietro (113) along with the Riders’ Hudson will all be trying to win their third straight state titles on Wednesday.

Swimming

Sussex Tech boys place fifth: Sussex Tech High placed fifth in the team standings to highlight the Henlopen Conference’s showing at the DIAA boys’ swimming state championships at Sussex Academy on Sunday.

Salesianum won the program’s fifth straight state title and 33rd in the last 40 seasons with 335 points. Wilmington Charter took second place with 275.

Sussex Tech collected 122 points while Cape Henlopen (11th, 85), Indian River (12th, 60), Sussex Academy (13th, 60) and Caesar Rodney (15th, 48) all finished in the top 15.

Individually, Sussex Central’s Breyden Wright placed second in both the 100-yard butterfly (52.21 seconds) and the 100-yard backstroke (53.32). He was the only downstate swimmer to finish in the top three in any event.

Track & field

State meet at Dover: The boys’ and girls’ DIAA indoor track & field state meet will be held outside at Dover High on Wednesday.

The boys’ meet will be held first, with the events scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1:35 p.m. The girls’ meet is then scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 5:40 p.m.

The meet, which has been held in Maryland in recent years, has to be held outside this year because of COVID-19 guidelines.
