Local college notebook: Robb bowls her way into DelState history

Posted

DOVER — On paper, Katie Robb was the top bowler in the final four of the national tournament.

But the Delaware State junior knew that didn’t change anyone’s perception of her going into the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles semifinals last weekend.

“As I was playing, I heard one of the television announcers say that despite my first-seed standing, I was still considered an underdog,” Robb was quoted in a story on DSU Hornets.com.

So Robb went out and proved she was indeed the best by winning the tournament title on the lanes.

Robb beat Ana Olaya of North Carolina A&T, 186-166, in the championship match of the event held in Wyoming, Mich. She got to the finals by topping Isabel Allen of McKendree, 215-195, in the semis.

Robb is believed to be the first national champion in DSU’s athletic history.

She earned her top seeding by virtue of her scores in winning a regional in Dayton, Ohio.

“I won in the sectionals, and I wanted to prove that it wasn’t a fluke,” Robb was quoted.

In the finals, Robb fell behind 102-90 after six frames. She decided to change her ball — which is fairly unusual in the middle of a big match.

“Playing with fear is not the way to go, so I trusted my instincts,” she said.

In the 10th frame, Robb needed at least a nine to win the match. She delivered strikes on her first two balls to capture the title.

“Katie was remarkable throughout the tournament,” said Hornet coach Elysia Current. “She made so many great shots, communicated well and took advantage of comeback opportunities.”

DelTech wins region

The Delaware Technical Community College softball team won the NJCAA Region 19 championship last Friday.

The Roadrunners swept Lackawanna, 11-1 and 9-1.

DelTech is in Keyser, W.Va. today to face Potomac State College in a best-of-three series for the chance to play for a national title. The two teams play today and Sunday at 1 p.m. with a third game to follow if necessary.

The winner advances to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament in Oxford, Ala.

Of the 18 members of the squad, 14 are former Henlopen Conference players.

In the first game against Lackawanna, freshman pitcher Lauren Smith pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Courtney Kohel (Milford), freshman Macey Myers (Milford), and freshman Colleen Cosbey (Sussex Tech) all went 3-for-3, with Myers collecting two doubles and five RBI.

In the second game, sophomore Caitlin Pontak threw a four-hitter. Cosbey had two hits, including a home run, and freshman Logan Walls (Delmar) and sophomore Kaylie Moore each had two hits.

‘Where we belong’

Delaware put out a letter from football coach Danny Rocco thanking various people for their contributions to the Blue Hens’ spring season.

Last Saturday, Delaware fell to South Dakota State, 33-3, in the NCAA FCS Division I semifinals to close out a 7-1 campaign.

“The tangible reminders of this team’s success sit in our football office as I have the honor to see the Battle of the Blue trophy and the CAA championship trophy daily,” wrote Rocco. “It’s a reminder of all the incredible players and coaches who have come before me who have represented Delaware with pride. As I look back at our tremendous history, I think about our 2018 team and the student-athletes who brought us back to the playoffs that year that laid the foundation for this year’s team. I am honored to be leading this program back to the national prominence where we belong.

“The best is still yet to come.”

Notes

The Delaware men’s basketball team officially announced the signing of former Sanford star Jyáre Davis, who recently said he was transferring from Providence. “Jyáre is a high character young man who will be a great fit in our program and with our culture. He brings a talented skill set and a versatility to the forward position that will make our team better,” said Hens’ coach Martin Ingelsby. ... Delaware women’s basketball coach Sarah Jenkins has been hired as an assistant at Penn State. She spent four years with the Blue Hens, including last season when she was associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. ... The Delaware State baseball team goes into a three-game weekend series at Norfolk State needing one win or one loss by Coppin State to blinch a spot in the MEAC Tournament. ... Unless Wesley College makes the post-season, today’s AEC softball championship game between the Wolverines and Cabrini will be the last sporting event in the school’s history.
