Delaware State bowling fans can relive the Hornets’ MEAC championship victory this weekend. The MEAC Bowling Championship will air on ESPNU and ESPN3 Sunday at 9 p.m.

The Hornets captured their first MEAC championship since 2010, and third overall, with a 4-1 victory over Norfolk State in Chesapeake, Va., last weekend. The title match capped off a perfect weekend for DSU, which posted a 9-0 record in the tournament, including a 4-0 mark in bracket play.

Delaware State senior Stephanie Sheridan was selected as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer after registering a 193.0 average during team games on Friday. The honor was the latest in a memorable senior season for Sheridan, who recently became the first bowler in team history to qualify for the USBC national individual championships after finishing third in the regional competition with a 211.3 average in six games this month.

The Hornets will also compete in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships April 20-23 in Wichita, Kan.

Joining Sheridan on the MEAC All-Tournament Team was teammate Chelsey Merklinger, who also earned 2015-16 All-MEAC First Team honors.

The 2015-16 Hornets have also excelled in the classroom this season.

Seven members of the team are among 33 student-athletes earning 2016 MEAC Bowling All-Academic honors: Elizabeth Burkholder, Brianna Kauffman, Amoni Knight, Amber MacLeod, Chelsey Merklinger, Stephanie Sheridan and Ryanne Tyler.

Delaware State’s seven MEAC All-Academic selections rank first among the league’s 10 bowling institutions.

Holden highly sought after

Former University of Delaware point guard Kory Holden is ranked by ESPN as the No. 1 available transfer in college basketball.

Holden announced he was leaving the Blue Hens after his sophomore season. He was a second team All-CAA selection this past year and led Delaware 17.7 points per game.

According to ESPN, Holden has received interest from Arizona, Maryland, Kansas, Miami, South Carolina, Baylor, Seton Hall and Virginia Tech among others since his transfer announcement.

Delmar grad prepares for NFL

Alex Ellis, of the University of Tennessee, had the top broad jump score of 101 and third best cone time at Tennessee’s Pro-Day this past week, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Ellis, who was a former walk-on to the Volunteers coming out of Delmar High, finished his career 232 yards and one touchdown on 26 catches as a tight end.

At the Pro-Day, Ellis ran between the high 4.5s and low 4.7s in his three timed 40-yard dash sprints and recorded a 34.5-inch vertical leap.

Notes

• The Delaware State baseball team is scheduled to meet UMES this weekend with a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m., and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.

DSU is 4-20 overall, but sits atop the MEAC North with a 4-1 league record, one game ahead of second place Norfolk State (3-2). UMES brings a 1-4 MEAC record (5-18 overall) into the weekend series.

• Colby Wyatt, a Lake Forest grad, and Kaitlyn Slater, a Woodbridge High grad, each homered for the Wilmington University softball team in a doubleheader sweep of the University of the Sciences on Thursday. Delmar grad Danielle Bradley struck out six while only giving up one run to earn the win in the nightcap.

• Woodbridge High product Hailey Andrews has helped lead Indian River State College (Fort Pierce, Fla.) to a 29-6 overall record and a 10-0 record in conference as its starting pitcher.

• The Delaware State women’s tennis team has won its last four matches to improve to 8-3 overall. Colleen Beck, from Cape Henlopen High, is 5-0 in individual matches for the Hornets this season.
