Letter to the Editor: Recent events enough to make ‘eyebrows crawl’

Posted

During this unusually hot summer, I sometimes feel like a character in Rudyard Kipling’s 19th-century India, “where the ’eat would make your bloomin’ eyebrows crawl.” It takes all my energy to watch the craziness that’s happening around me. First, the explosion at the Kabul airport. A single person with a 25-pound bomb vest kills or wounds hundreds of people including his fellow countrymen. How crazy that a cult called ISIS-K could order such an atrocity.

Closer to home, the delta variant is killing the unvaccinated at such a rate that the total dead (nearly 680,000) has surpassed the 675,000 who died in the 1918-19 influenza pandemic. Why are so many not getting vaccinated? Is it because people are anti-vaccine and think it’s better to trust COVID-19 to the livestock dewormer ivermectin than to trust science?

This same group often believes that human-caused climate change is a hoax. Where do these crazy ideas come from? One explanation is they result from reducing the concept of truth to a set of twisted beliefs where everything — everything — is a matter of politics and personal loyalty. If scientists tell you that vaccines work and that climate change is real, they are dismissed as “radical, leftist never-Trumpers.” End of story.

The Democrats need to act now: Pass the John Lewis and the For the People acts to protect the coming elections and save us from what is, or is fast becoming, one more very dangerous cult.
