Letter-writer Lonnie Brewer quotes the sections of the Doha agreement covering obligations undertaken by the U.S. (“Biden dealing with Trump’s decisions,” Sept. 19). It omits the conditions the Taliban was required to meet, including reaching an accord with the Afghan government.
Taliban conditions were not met, rendering the agreement null. Joe Biden had no obligation to perform any of the steps cited. Strangely, the one Trump obligation he chose to honor was the invalidated one. If Mr. Biden chose to close Bagram before evacuating Americans and allies because “then the Republican Party and (Donald) Trump would have been crying foul,” he clearly lacks the courage and independence to be making decisions of that magnitude. It wasn’t Republicans demanding an immediate, hasty withdrawal, let alone abandonment of Bagram. Biden did have to “deal with the decisions of his predecessor.” In this case, it was one his predecessor left him free to walk away from. But he’s never explained why he chose not to.
