In response to Ken Abraham’s ideas, (“There are solutions to reduce gun violence,” Aug. 17), I believe there should have been a No. 4 on his list: Bring back the death penalty. There has to be an ultimate penalty for certain crimes.
Regarding his No. 1 idea — more uniformed, restrained and well-trained police officers — I agree. But there’s still going to be crime. What’s the penalty for those crimes? You’re not going to be able to educate some people not to kill. Evil is evil and must be dealt with appropriately.
Does the death penalty deter crime? Doesn’t matter. That is the penalty for the crime that the person committed. If it deters the same crime from another individual, that’s a bonus.
You want to start program after program to get the youth off the streets and out of bad situations, fine. I’m all for that, but you need to educate them that there are certain things you do not do, and the penalty for those crimes is severe and just.
