DOVER — Lawmakers announced Tuesday the creation of an ad-hoc committee to promote the state’s tradition of hunting.

The bipartisan Delaware Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus was formed under the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. More than 2,000 lawmakers in 48 states are part of the national assembly.

Reps. Jeff Spiegelman, R-Clayton, and William Carson, D-Smyrna, and Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, and Bruce Ennis, D-Smyrna, are the co-chairmen of the group. The caucus aims to ensure hunters and fishers are able to pursue their passions. It will work to provide access to public lands and promote wildlife activities as important to Delaware’s economy and heritage.

More lawmakers may join the group, which is expected to meet before the Legislature gathers in January.

“The activities that this caucus will promote are ones that have been passed down from generation to generation,” Sen. Pettyjohn said in a statement. “As an avid hunter and fisherman, and having so many avid hunters and fishermen in Delaware, it’s extremely important that we maintain this legacy that is so important to many of our friends, neighbors and constituents throughout the state.”
