DOVER — Noah Lanouette rounded first base and it felt like a dream.

The Dover High junior couldn’t believe what he had just done — hit a grand slam to give the Senators the lead in the sixth inning over Caesar Rodney High.

“I can’t even explain it ... this is crazy,” Lanouette said. “I turned around second base and I saw my team running out the dugout all excited. That’s when I knew it was real.”

Lanouette’s grand slam capped a come-from-behind victory for the Senators, who edged CR 4-3 on Monday afternoon in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest.

Dover recorded only four hits, but Lanouette made sure the Senators remained undefeated at 6-0.

The Senators trailed 3-0 after two innings and were struggling to mount a rally until the bottom of the sixth. Jarvis Worthy led off with an infield hit before Michael Carrington reached on a throwing error.

Dom Velazquez was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lanouette came to the plate with two outs and worked the count to 2-0.

He guessed he would see a fastball in a good spot to hit.

He was right and sent a fly ball over the fence to the left of the 385-feet sign in center field.

“I was setting dead on the fastball and that’s what he threw,” Lanouette said. “I’ve been seeing the ball well lately so I just attacked it. I hit the ball solid and it just carried out of the park.”

Lanouette is in his first year starting for the Senators as their designated hitter.

“Here’s a kid who made varsity last year and probably batted twice,” said Dover coach Dave Gordon. “He kept his mouth shut, showed up to practice every single day and just worked at it, worked at it and worked at it.

“It was one day at practice this year when he earned his spot. We did a drill where the coaches were throwing and he’s just peppering balls into the gaps. I said you know what, let’s throw him in there. He’s taken the DH role and just ran with it.”

The Riders (2-5) were let by Christopher Friend’s solo home run and Matthew Donovan, who had a 2-for-3 day.

Velazquez, Dover’s freshman pitcher, went the distance to record the win. He settled down after giving up the three early runs and kept CR off the scoreboard for the final five frames.

“We were down the whole game but we never thought we were going to lose,” Lanouette said.

“I think it’s just a credit to these kids,” Gordon said. “There’s been a lot of victories in this program. I think we know how to win and we know how to win when we’re down. It was great to see that again.”

Velazquez finished with eight strikeouts. He produced a pair of double plays to escape trouble in the fourth and fifth innings.

He also stranded the potential tying run at third base in the top of the seventh by forcing a groundout to second base.
