Will Knight did just about everything on offense for the Division I state champion Smyrna High football team this season.
Knight, a sophomore running back, was named the state Offensive Player of the Year, topping a group of five Smyrna players named to the first team on the DIFCA All-State football squad that was announced Tuesday.
Knight ran for 2,025 yards and 33 touchdowns with an average of 8.9 yards per carry and 155 yards per game. He also had 17 catches for 310 yards with four more TDs.
While he spent the most time as a running back in Smyrna’s spread offense, he was the centerpiece to the Eagles’ “earthquake” package when he lined up for direct snaps. Running out of that formation he scored 51 two-point conversions.
Knight was responsible for 324 total points this season, helping lead an offense that averaged 51.4 points per game.
He even threw the ball for 9-of-14 attempts with a touchdown and 199 yards. He only fumbled once the entire season in his 226 carries.
“It’s amazing that he’s able to handle as much as he can,” said Smyrna coach Mike Judy. “Honestly there’s not much the kid can’t do.”
“He’s the pulse of the team,” Judy added. “Anytime he had a great game, we had a great game.”
Other first-team selections from Smyrna, which won the program’s first DIAA Division I state championship on Saturday, were junior quarterback Nolan Henderson, senior receiver Donte Ritchie, senior offensive guard Terren Carter and his brother junior offensive tackle Jerren Carter.
“I think it’s a great representation of our team,” Judy said. “When you get to this point in the year, there’s a lot of great players out there. It’s an honor for not only our team but for our community.”
Smyrna also had senior wide receiver Brandon Bishop named to the second-team on offense and three second-teamers on defense — senior defensive tackle Jeff Campbell, junior linebacker Eli Hutchinson and senior defensive back Rodney Ruff.
Salesianum senior Colby Reeder was named the Defensive Player of the Year while his teammate, senior Kyle Cathers, was selected as the state’s Lineman of the Year. The teams were selected by the Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association.
Dover senior quarterback Triston Harris was awarded second-team honors on offense. His teammate senior Tyler Rosello made the third team on offense at center and on defense at defensive tackle.
Kent County players swept all three spots on the special teams second-team with junior Arles Henriquez of Laurel at kicker, senior Mark Bonnie of Polytech at punter and senior Ben Moore of Lake Forest at returner. Bonnie also made the third-team as a kicker.
Other Henlopen Conference honorees on the second team were Cape Henlopen senior Mike Williams at defensive end, Woodbridge junior Leah Styles at defensive end and his teammate, senior Jaylyn Magee at linebacker. The Blue Raiders also had junior Shymere Vessels named third-team defensive tackle.
Sussex Central had three players make the third team. Senior running back KiAnte’ Sturgis and junior offensive tackle Myles Vernet represented the Golden Knights on offense while senior Cory McCary made it as a defensive back.
Milford’s Shawn Snowden, a senior, was awarded third-team tight end.
Lake Forest’s second honoree was senior defensive back Jordan Simpson on the third team. He was joined by Cape senior linebacker Jeremiah Smack and Sussex Tech senior defensive back James Harmon on third-team defense.
