DOVER — With the wide scope of activities that Sylvia Henderson and her committee have planned for Saturday’s Super Senator Day, she is sure the inaugural event will be … well, super!

The first Super Senator Day promises to paint the city blue-and-white and will take place at Dover High School on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Ms. Henderson, assistant superintendent of the Capital School District, said the entire community is invited to the free event – which includes a small lunch – to get a glimpse at all of the things taking place within the district as well as take a tour of the high school.

“This event is going to take the place of our Education Fair that we usually host in the winter at the Dover Mall,” Ms. Henderson said. “Having Super Senator Day at the new high school will offer us more space to showcase what the district is all about.

“We will be having musical and dance performances, but we’ll also have an art display and our cheerleaders and our Junior ROTC drill team will be participating as well. We will have 54 tables that will be set up in the gymnasium that will be related to either a school in the district or a community sponsor.”

Sean Christiansen, president of the Capital School District board of education, pointed out that Smyrna has its I Love Smyrna School District Day and Caesar Rodney has its Rider Pride Day.

Now, he said, it’s time for the Capital School District to show off what’s happening in its 12 schools, from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.

“It will provide an opportunity to showcase all of the schools in our district, from education to music and the arts to the beautiful facility we have at the new high school,” Mr. Christiansen said. “The Capital School District has tremendous things to be proud of and they will be on display at the event.

“This is not only an event for parents to come and see, it’s a chance for the entire community to see what kinds of great things that are taking place within our school district.”

Students will put a time capsule inside a vault inside the gymnasium at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to unofficially kick off Super Senator Day. The time capsule will contain a variety of items, though none were officially disclosed on Tuesday.

Many businesses participating in the event will have tables that will focus on wellness and health. Most of the booths will be for informational purposes.

Dr. Henderson said the timing of Super Senator Day was something the committee discussed and agreed upon.

“We’re really excited,” she said. “This will actually serve as the kickoff to our homecoming festivities. We wanted to have an event like this as our kickoff before the next weekend’s homecoming football game and dance.

“There’s just going to be a lot of Dover pride surrounding Super Senator Day. We want to use it as a chance to show the community all of the kinds of things that the Capital School District has to offer.”
