BALTIMORE — Delaware State’s win streak ended with a thud on Monday night.

The Hornets had a rough evening shooting and were outrebounded again in a 83-75 defeat at Coppin State in a MidEastern Athletic Conference matchup. DelState (6-7 MEAC, 9-19 overall) was trying to win its fifth game in a row.

Delaware State gave up a 15-0 run in the first half and while the Hornets did make it a one-possession game several times in the last 10 minutes of the contest, they never led in the second half.

“We got back in the game but once we did we started doing plays that weren’t us,” said DSU senior guard DeAndre Haywood. “We started playing their way instead of playing our brand of basketball. That’s what let them get the big lead again.”

Haywood was the Hornets’ leading scorer with a season-high 24 points. He was one of the few Hornets to shoot well, going 8-10 on field goal attempts and finished 8-of-8 from the line.

Three-point specialists Kavon Waller and Dana Raysor each struggled. They both were 2-of-8 from three and 3-of-9 from the floor. Devin Morgan, DSU’s top scorer on the season, scored 14 points but also shot 2-of-8 from three.

“We just got off our mark early,” said DSU coach Keith Walker. “We have some guys who if they get started early, then they shoot the ball well. But if they struggle early, then they get out of it the rest of the game. Generally we shoot the ball better than we did tonight.”

Delaware State could not contain Coppin State’s Chas Brown who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Brown was perfect from the floor (6-for-6) and also grabbed four of Coppin State’s 13 offensive rebounds as the Eagles won the rebounding battle 47-34.

“He’s a tough inside player,” Walker said. “We usually have a deficit rebounding but we could have done a better job in that area. Kobe (Gantz) had six, he’s a guard. If a guard is your leading rebounder you have to look at your forwards and centers.”

Coppin State’s 15-0 run came early in the first half as the Eagles raced out to a 22-8 advantage. DelState was able to chip away and whittle the deficit down to 39-33 at halftime.

The Hornets pulled within one point and had a chance to grab the lead but a layup attempt by Morgan rolled out. Coppin State responded with four unanswered points to build its lead to 61-56 before a DSU timeout with 7:22 left.

DelState could only pull within as close three points the rest of the way.

“We would either turn it over or settle for a long three-pointer,” Walker said. “We didn’t make good decisions down the stretch.”

All of Coppin State’s started finished in double figures. Brown was tops with 22 and Terry Harris scored 17 points while Tre’ Thomas chipped in 15. Keith Shivers knocked down four three-pointers for 12 points and Dejuan Clayton added 10.

Polytech High product Devaughn Mallory scored nine points for DelState and was tied as its top rebounder with six.
