ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Sophomore guard Lorna Caesar hit a follow-up basket with only 0.5 seconds left to give Delaware State its first MEAC win of the season, 72-70, over South Carolina State in women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 70-70 on a layup by Jahmia Bradley with 10 seconds remaining. After a Delaware State timeout, Alycea Sharpe missed a jumper, but DSU’s NaJai Pollard grabbed the rebound and found Casear open under the basket for the game-winning shot.

The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for the Hornets (1-4 MEAC, 2-16 overall), who won for the first time since a 61-49 victory over Wagner on Nov. 20.

There were six ties and four lead changes in the second half.

Caesar also hit a jumper to tie the game at 68-68, with 1:24 remaining. She finished with a career-high 11 points and five assists.

Pollard recorded her 11th double-double of the season with game highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Mikah Aldridge was second on the Hornets with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

Pollard has eight games with 20-or-more points this season while Aldridge has 10 games with two or more three-pointers.

MEN, S. Carolina State 74, Delaware State 64: After a 2-0 start in the MEAC, the Hornets dropped their third straight to fall to 5-15 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

DelState trailed 33-28 at halftime, but rallied to take a 49-48 lead on a basket and free throw by Dana Raysor with 8:03 left.

But, on the ensuing possession, South Carolina State (2-2, 5-12) had three shots at the basket. Ozante Fields hit a layup and free throw after an offensive rebound to put the Bulldogs ahead 51-49 to stay.

Delaware State pulled to within 64-60 on a three-point play by Devin Morgan with 1:32 left, but SC State’s Tashombe Riley was perfect on four free throws and J.J. Richardson scored on a slam over the next 40 seconds to give the Bulldogs a 70-60 lead in the final minute.

Artem Tavakalyan, starting his fifth straight game in place of injured forward DeVaughn Mallory (calf), was Delaware State’s leading scorer with 14 points to tie his season best. Tavakalyan was 6-for-10 from the field and 2-of-3 on three-point shots in the game.

Devin Morgan added 11 points and DeAndre Haywood 10 for the Hornets, although they combined to shoot just 7-of-27 from the field.
