DOVER — One of two suspects in an Oct. 17 home invasion and homicide investigation was returned to Dover on Tuesday morning to face charges including first-degree murder, authorities said.

Saleem M. Shabazz, 21, of Philadelphia, was extradited from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania at approximately 10:30 a.m. by state detectives from the Department of Justice Extradition Unit, the Delaware State Police said in a news release.

Mr. Shabazz, of the 600 block of N. 66th St., was taken to Troop 2, processed and arraigned on charges also including attempted robbery (two counts), first-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (six counts), first-degree burglary (two counts), first- and second-degree conspiracy.

After arraignment through Justice of the Peace Court 2 in Rehoboth Beach through video phone, Mr. Shabazz was ordered held without bond at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Earlier, police said three people were shot — two fatally — during a reported home invasion at approximately 1:38 a.m. in the 1400 block of John Clark Road in the Rodney Village neighborhood south of Dover.

Delaware authorities said they worked with the First State Fugitive Task Force, the Eastern Pennsylvania Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force, and Norristown (Pa.) Police Department to locate Mr. Shabazz in the unit block of East Jacoby Street in Norristown, Pa. He was taken into custody without incident at approximately 5 p.m. Oct. 22, police said.

Mr. Shabazz was held at Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1 million cash bail, authorities said.

On Oct. 18, Matthew Harrington, 23, turned himself in to police in Buckingham, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania resident was held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility while awaiting extradition to Delaware, authorities said on Tuesday.

Earlier, police said Mr. Harrington was facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted robbery (two counts), first-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (six counts), first-degree burglary (two counts), first- and second-degree conspiracy.

Two dead, one wounded

When announcing the alleged incident last month, police said Clifton Leager, 52, of Dover, and Haley Henwood, 18, of Philadelphia, were shot and killed as a result of a home invasion at a residence in the south Dover area.

Police said Mr. Leager’s adult son also was shot during an altercation at the residence.

The adult son chased the fleeing suspects, authorities said, and later was taken from the scene via EMS, treated and released at an undisclosed local hospital. Police said Ms. Henwood was shot during the foot chase.

Ms. Henwood reportedly arrived in the Dover area with the two other suspects, police said, and her involvement to the alleged incident was unknown at the time of the initial release.

When asked Tuesday if the incident was being investigated as a possible double homicide, state police spokesman Sgt. Richard Bratz said there was no update available due to it being an ongoing investigation.

In court papers, a member of the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit said troopers arrived at the residence and found a person, whose name was redacted, on the floor near the back door, with a gunshot wound to the chest. A 911 call placed at 1:35 a.m. initially reported a shooting after an unknown person had entered the residence and a struggle ensued, according to documents.

Police said shell casings were found near the deceased person’s body and “there were items tossed about the house indicating that a struggle had occurred inside of the residence.”

In a probable cause affidavit, police said a post mortem was conducted by the Delaware of Forensic Sciences and the death was ruled a homicide.

Police said a person who lives at the residence suffered a gunshot wound to his left torso, and was transported to a hospital and in stable condition.

According to police in papers, a person within the residence heard a commotion in the main room and saw a man fighting with another wearing a ski mask. The person reported that she heard the person in the ski mask ask where the “stuff was,” according to documents.

Gunshots heard

The person said a 911 call was made and gunshots were heard. The man was found lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his chest, police said in papers.

In two recorded interviews at the hospital and Troop 3, police said in papers, a person whose name was redacted reportedly said he was a longtime acquaintance of Mr. Shabazz and that he allegedly had a falling out with him over a drug deal in April 2014. There had been no contact with Mr. Shabazz since, the person claimed, according to papers.

“(Name redacted) stated that he was sure Shabazz was the black male suspect in this incident event though he stated that both suspects wore masks,” police wrote in papers.

“(Name redacted) stated that he told Shabazz ‘there’s nothing here, bro’ but did not explain what he meant by that.”

Also, police said in papers, suspects allegedly were seen placing masks over their faces and walking nearby the residence, and suspects were seen returning to their vehicle after shots were fired.

Police said in documents that a receipt allegedly was found in the area where a dark-colored SUV had been parked, and it indicated a duct tape purchase made in Dover.

“Examination of the store surveillance video yielded footage of the white male suspect shoplifting white latex gloves from the business,” police said in papers.

“The boxes of gloves opened by the white male suspect were collected by (Homicide Unit detective’s name redacted).”

In documents, police claimed the boxes were processed and a fingerprint belonging to a suspect whose name was redacted was located.

“It should be noted that the males in the (redacted) footage match (name redacted) and Shabazz,” according to police in documents.

Police said they were informed that “(name redacted) and Shahbazz departed Philadelphia for Dover on the night of (Oct. 16, 2015)” while operating a dark colored SUV.”
