High School Roundup: Caravel holds off comeback by Smyrna

Smyrna High stormed back in the fourth quarter, cutting a 13-point deficit to just one against Caravel on Wednesday night.

But the Buccaneers netted the contest’s final three points to hang on for a 48-44 win over the Eagles in a non-conference boys’ basketball matchup at Smyrna.

After falling behind by scores of 30-17 in the third quarter and 43-30 in the fourth, Smyrna (1-2) closed within 45-44 on Elisha Gregory’s fastbreak dunk with 1:15 remaining. The Eagles, though, never got any closer.

Trailing 47-44, Smyrna missed a three-point attempt with 20 seconds left.

Gregory tallied 21 points as only three Eagles scored in the contest. Majesti Carter had 15 with Devin DeMoe adding the other eight, including a three-pointer that got Smyrna within 45-42.

Caravel (2-1), which avenged a 17-point loss to the Eagles in last year’s DIAA state tournament, got 21 points from John Clemmons. He sank all four of the Bucs’ three-pointers.

Dover 73, Sussex Central 37: The Senators (5-1) opened up a 39-15 halftime advantage before posting the Henlopen North victory.

Jaheim Harrell had 16 points and seven steals for Dover with Tyrone Tolson adding 14 points and Amir Hite scoring 10.

Woodbridge 60, Cape Henlopen 57: The Blue Raiders built a 33-21 lead over the first two quarters before holding off the Vikings in the second half.

Kenny Newton tallied a game-high 22 points for Woodbridge. Emanuel McCrea-Mosley had 16 and Bruce Mosley added 12.

Kay’von Jackson (18), Drew Zimmerman (14) and Zimere Blden (13) led Cape Henlopen. The Vikings went 9-for-11 from the foul line while Woodbridge was 0-for-10.

Delmar 59, Sussex Tech 52: The Wildcats shook off an early seven-point deficit to pick up the win.

Freshman Davin Chandler scored a game-high 22 points for Delmar with Takai Hugee (16) and Brian Spence (14) also leading the way.

Jamaal Jones (14), Jameel Watson (12), Isaiah Ayers (12) and Donald Saintphard (10) all scored in double figures for the Ravens.

Appoquinimink 78, Delmarva Christian 68: The Jaguars used a 29-14 third-quarter run to take control before holding off the Royals.

Delmarva Christian’s Gabe Herling scored 25 points with Dontarius Jones adding 23. The two combined to sink seven three-pointers.

Appoquinimink had five players score in double figures.

Girls’ basketball

Caravel 50. Cape Henlopen 40: Caravel outscored Cape Henlopen High by 15 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a non-conference victory over the Vikings in girls’ basketball on Tuesday night.

Cape Henlopen held a 34-29 advantage over the Buccaneers after three quarters of the contest played in Lewes.

The Buccaneers (4-2) finished the game on a 21-6 run.

Julia Saleur (13 points, 8 rebounds), Lauryn Heard (8 points, 11 rebounds 4 assists) and Morgan Mahoney (8 points, 10 rebounds) paced the Vikings (3-2), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Senior India Johnston, who is committed to Towson, netted a game-high 23 points for Caravel, including the 1,000th of her career. Taylor Wilkins added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shot.

Lake Forest 56, Milford 11: The Spartans tallied 41 points over the second and third quarters to put away the victory.

Senior Gabrielle Almonte finished with a game-high 26 points for Lake Forest. She hit 13 of the Spartans’ 26 field goals.

Sussex Central 50, Odessa 18: The Golden Knights (1-5) out-scored the Ducks, 19-6, in the first quarter before picking up their first win of the season.

Wrestling

Caravel 52, Cape Henlopen 21: The Buccaneers handed the Vikings (2-1) their first loss of the season with the decisive non-conference victory on Wednesday.
