The Henlopen Conference has been the class of the field in recent years at the DIAA individual state wrestling tournament.

And judging by the seeds, expect this weekend to be no different.

The top seed in 10 of the 14 weight classes are from the Henlopen Conference in the two-day event. First round action begins tonight at 4 p.m. with the quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

The tournament is hosted by Dover High.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The semifinals are at 11 a.m.

Tickets are $5 for Friday, $6 for Saturday’s first session and $7 for the finals

The Henlopen Conference set the record for most individual champions with 10 in 2013. Since then, it has had 10 champions every single year.

Returning champions from last year in the field out of the Henlopen include — Caesar Rodney High’s Cam Hayes, Smyrna High’s Greg Baum, Larsen Wilson and Chase Archangelo, Sussex Central’s Brandon Bautista and Cape Henlopen’s Cory Lawson.

There is also Smyrna’s Tony Wuest, who won a state championship as a freshman two years ago but didn’t make it to the championship in 2016 because of an injury.

Hayes, a junior, and Archangelo, a senior, are searching for the third state title of their careers. Hayes is the No. 1 seed at 120 pounds while Archangelo is top seed at 145 pounds.

One of Bautista and Lawson will not repeat this year. They are both in the 160-pound bracket with Lawson as the top seed.

Wuest is the other defending champion from the Henlopen Conference who is a No. 1 seed. He sits atop the 195-pound bracket.

Other downstaters seeded first include Robbie Rosser of Milford (113), Jackson Dean of Caesar Rodney (132), Anthony Fisher of Dover (138), Blake Chambers of Sussex Central (170), Lucas Hudson of Sussex Central (182) and Zach Flores of Cape Henlopen at heavyweight.

Fisher is seeking to become Dover’s first individual state champion since 2005. He is fresh off an overtime victory in the championship round of the Henlopen Conference individual tournament a week ago.

Salesianum’s Zach Spence (106), Nick Novarnik of St. Georges (126), Sanford’s Timmy Griffith (152) and Keith Medley of Caravel (220) are the four top seeds from upstate schools.
