DOVER — A 20-year-old man who allegedly fled from police after a vehicle chase Wednesday afternoon was wanted on numerous felony shoplifting cases and other charges at the time, authorities said.
Damir Hughes Warren is sought after a Dover Police Department chase beginning at 2:29 p.m. near Lafferty Lane and ending at the corner of Haslet Street and Plumage Court.
The sequence lasted a few minutes before Mr. Warren allegedly fled from his car, police said.
Later, a dark colored vehicle was seen straddling a sidewalk before it was towed away. It was not impounded because it was abandoned, police said.
A nearby street sign was lying on the ground.
Police said Mr. Warren, whose address was unavailable, is facing chase-related charges of disregard police signal, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a collision, driving while suspended and other alleged traffic offenses.
The incident at the back of the Village at Blue Hen Apartments complex off South Little Creek Road and next to the School View neighborhood put nearby schools into lockdown status.
East Dover Elementary School and Corporate Kids Learning Center were notified “within a minute or two of the suspect fleeing on foot,” Dover PD spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.
According to authorities, Delaware State Police assisted in the search, along with approximately 10 to 12 Dover police officers who established a perimeter and provided school security while looking for the suspect.
Police said information on the suspect was entered into the Delaware Justice Information System available to all law enforcement agencies.
