Former Polytech, DSU hoop star Mallory transferring to Philadelphia University
DeVaughn MalloryDevaughn Mallory has decided on his new home.
The former Polytech High basketball standout will transfer to Philadelphia University. He had spent the last two seasons with Delaware State University.
City of Basketball Love broke the news of Mallory’s commitment to Philadelphia on late Monday night.
Mallory requested and received his release from Delaware State during the first week of April.
He will have two seasons of eligibility left at Philadelphia — a Division II school which plays in the 14-team Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. It is in the same conference as Delaware schools Wilmington University and Goldey-Beacom College.
Mallory isn’t the only local product to attend Philadelphia in recent years. Andre Gibbs, a former All-Stater from Smyrna High, finished his senior season this past year at Philadelphia and averaged 12.4 points per game.
Philadelphia went 20-8 during the regular season in 2016-2017 and won the CACC Southern Division. The Rams made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Mallory comes to Philadelphia after a sophomore year at DelState where he started 19 games. He averaged 10.2 points per game and was the Hornets’ top rebounder with 6.2 a game.
Mallory’s year was interrupted by a calf injury which forced him to miss 14 contests.
He is a former Gatorade Delaware Player-of-the-Year award winner when he helped the Panthers finish as the DIAA state tournament runner-up in 2014-2015.
Mallory averaged only 13 minutes a game as a freshman at DSU before having a breakout season last year.
In what turned out to be his final game with the Hornets, Mallory led them with 16 points and nine rebounds in a MEAC Tournament first round defeat to Bethune-Cookman.
Mallory is the second player who is transferring from Delaware State this offseason. The Hornets’ top scorer, Devin Morgan, is also leaving following his sophomore year.
Morgan made the All-MEAC team this past season and was also the conference’s Rookie-of-the-Year in 2016. Morgan already has an offer from Youngstown State on the table.
