MILLSBORO — Five arrests were made after investigation into the alleged embezzlement of $641,100 from a Sussex County American Legion post, authorities said Friday.

The Delaware Division of Gaming Enforcement said investigation found that six American Legion Post 28 past or present officers allegedly stole funds from the organization between July 31, 2012, and Jan. 12, 2015.

“The investigation revealed the suspects, who were Post 28 officers at the time, wrote and signed numerous checks out to cash, cashed the checks at local banks and the funds were not returned to or used for American Legion Post 28 business,” according to Gaming Enforcement in a news release.

The American Legion post initially reported suspicions to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security in January 2016.

A three-month felony theft investigation concluded on Thursday, Gaming Enforcement said. \

Arrest warrants were obtained, and a search warrant was executed at the home of Samuel Mauger, 65, of the 25000 block of Pear Street in Millsboro.

The five suspects were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 in Rehoboth Beach and released pending a future court date.

The Division of Gaming Enforcement said a sixth suspect now deceased — David Yetman, 72, of Harbeson — was identified for allegedly stealing $218,040 in funds.

Mr. Mauger was charged with two counts of felony theft over $100,000, accounting for $376,000 overall, authorities alleged.

He was given a $41,000 unsecured bond.

James Gallagher, 65, of Millsboro, Edward Mazewski, 69, of Millsboro, and Michael Rooney, 66, of Georgetown were all charged with two counts of felony theft over $1,500. They were all given $2,000 unsecured bonds.

Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Rooney allegedly were responsible for $13,000 in missing funds, and Mr. Mazewski was cited for $20,000 in alleged theft.

Charles Nimmerichter, 53, of Millsboro, was charged with misdemeanor theft under $1,500 allegedly totaling $400 overall, the division said.

He was given a $500 unsecured bond.
