Five Henlopen teams make field hockey tourney

Four-time defending state champion Cape Henlopen High earned the top seed in the DIAA field hockey state tournament bracket that was determined on Friday.

The Henlopen Conference champion Vikings (15-0) are one of five Henlopen Conference teams to make the 16-team field. The tourney begins with first-round games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, 10th-seeded Dover (10-4-1) will play a 3:30 p.m. game at No. 7 Middletown (12-3); No. 15 Milford (9-5-1) will take on second-seeded Wilmington Christian (14-1) at The Montessori School at 2:30 p.m.; and third-seeded Delmar (12-1-1) will host No. 14 Conrad (10-4-1) at 2:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Cape Henlopen will host No. 16 Brandywine (11-4) at 2:30 p.m. while fourth-seeded Polytech (12-2) hosts Ursuline (10-4-1) at 2:30 p.m. The Vikings beat the Panthers in last year’s state finals.

The tournament continues with second-round games on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Henlopen Conference teams have won the state title in six straight years with two downstate squads playing in the finals each of the last four years.
