CAMDEN — The Smyrna High wrestling team kept up its winning ways on Wednesday night.

And these wins aren’t just normal wins. The Eagles are making sure to get as many points on the board as possible.

Smyrna stayed unbeaten against Delaware competition with a 52-19 victory over rival Caesar Rodney High in a Hemlopen Conference Northern Division matchup. The Eagles improved to 5-0 against the Henlopen North.

In its last four dual meets, the Eagles’ lowest scoring output is 47. The average margin of victory is 42 points in those matches.

“It’s a team thing where you can see they have a common goal and they want each other to get better,” said Smyrna coach Kurt Howell. “That’s what you love to see with kids. I love to see when kids fight every match to get better and we’re doing that right now.”

Smyrna raced out to an early 32-0 lead after the first six matches behind four pins, a technical fall and a decision.

Dakota Kerr and Mason Wilson started the dual off with back-to-back pins at 160 pounds and 170 pounds respectively. Larsen Wilson (182) was up next and earned a tech-fall with a 15-0 result in his bout.

Two more pins, one by Hunter Moyer (195) and another by Tony Wuest (220), followed. Wuest’s pin was the quickest of the night, needing only 25 seconds.

At heavyweight, Eli Taylor, a first-year wrestler, won via an 8-4 decision in a match Howell said he was most proud of.

“I liked Eli tonight,” Howell said. “He’s getting some quality wins here. On paper he wasn’t supposed to win that match. He did a nice job to get a good win. He’s one who started off the year with I think 10 straight losses and then he started figuring it out.”

Chase Archangelo (145) and Nate Bryant (152) closed the contest with consecutive pins. The Eagles also got two major-decisions on the night — Cole Sebastianelli (126) and J.T. Davis (138).

Howell credited the recent wide-margin of victories to a strong week of practice before Smyrna attended the Virginia Duals back on Jan. 13.

“I could see it happening,” Howell said. “I could see my guys gelling and getting together. They’re doing a lot of things together on their own. They’re meeting up with each other and going running and then you see them after practice teaching each other and helping each other.”

Caesar Rodney dropped to 2-3 in the Henlopen North and 5-4 overall this season.

The Riders were led Wednesday by Mike Primo’s pin at 106 pounds. Jackson Dean recorded a tech-fall for Caesar Rodney in his 138-pound matchup.

Kevin Bowne (113) and Cam Hayes (120) earned major-decisions.
