Dupervil, Córdoba make boys’ soccer Top XI All-State team

Like most really good goal scorers, Dalendy Dupervil got special attention from every defense he faced.

But, also like most good scorers, he didn’t let it stop him.

The Sussex Central High senior still finished with 23 goals and 10 assists as the Golden Knights captured the Henlopen North title.

Dupervil’s performance made him the highest-ranked boys’ soccer player in the Henlopen Conference and earned him the No. 4 spot on this year’s Top XI team.

Indian River senior Johan De Jesus Córdoba, who was ranked fifth, was the only other downstate player rated among the state’s top 11 players, as chosen by the state’s soccer coaches’ association.

Both Dupervil and Córdoba were among the state’s five players who were also named NSCAA Regional All-Americans.

With Dupervil leading the way Central had a breakout season this fall. The Knights went 14-4, won the North and reached the DIAA Division I state semifinals.

Dalendy Dupervil

“Technically, Dalendy has the ability to do anything he wants with the ball,” said Central coach Kevin Cash. “Dalendy has an extraordinary understanding of the game and his tactical awareness is at the highest level.

“His ability to change pace with or without the ball, coupled with the great element of deception, is what makes him an elite player in the state.”

Among Dupervil’s 23 goals were three game-winners in overtime. He scored at least one goal against every North team as well.

“Dalendy was without a doubt one of the top reasons Sussex Central won the Northern Henlopen Division and had such an outstanding season,” said Cash.

Likewise, Córdoba was one of the top offensive threats for the Henlopen South champion Indians.

The senior collected 21 goals and 17 assists as IR went 15-4 and reached the Division II state finals. He was ranked as the No. 1 player in the Henlopen South.

“Johan is incredible in the air and is a great ball winner,” said IR coach Steve Kilby. “He often works back and wins lost balls. A great striker of the ball with his left foot, Johan is exceptionally dangerous on set pieces. He is very difficult to take the ball from.”

Currently being recruited by several schools, Kilby said Córdoba is a legitimate college player.

“Johan took over our attack and allowed us to get forward to put pressure on our opponents’ back line,” said Kilby. “His incredible technical skills wreaked havoc on opposing defenses.”
