DOVER — The Delaware State-Howard men’s basketball game on Monday night was suspended and will be resumed at a later date to be announced.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest was halted with 15:41 left in the second half and Howard leading 41-38.

Officials stopped the game because the main clocks on the two side scoreboards were not synchronized with the clocks on top of the shot clocks at both baskets. The game was delayed for 33 minutes as the DSU staff attempted to fix the clocks and officials from both schools met at halfcourt.

The game could have gone on with just the two clocks on the scoreboards in use but Howard refused to play under those conditions. DSU athletic director Louis Perkins and Howard athletic director Kery Davis then agreed to suspend the game.

“Once they agreed, us being the host team, we have to pretty much go along with that decision,” DSU coach Keith Walker said. “I think that was the diplomatic thing to do.”

Howard coach Kevin Nickelberry declined to comment.

When the game resumes, it will be Delaware State’s ball in the frontcourt. The possession arrow will be favoring Howard.

The clock issues put a damper on what was one of Delaware State’s best performances of the season.

The Hornets (0-1 MEAC, 1-14 overall) led 34-31 at halftime behind 18 points from junior guard DeAndre Haywood. Junior center Scott Sill added six points off the bench, hitting all three shots he took from the floor.

DSU held Howard junior James Daniel III to 10 points in the first half before he sparked a 10-4 Bison run to begin the second. Daniel, the top scorer in NCAA Division I (28.5 points per game), finished the night with 16 points.

“The guys did a good job of sticking to the gameplan and trying to neutralize Daniel,” Walker said. “I thought DeAndre did a heck of a job on him, and by the way it wasn’t bad that he went and got himself 18 points. That’s not a bad situation at all.”

The Hornets have a two-game road trip this weekend. First is a game at South Carolina State Saturday at 4 p.m. before they face Savannah State on Monday at 8 p.m.

Officials from Howard, DSU and the MEAC will meet sometime this week to determine when Monday night’s game can be completed, according to Delaware State.

“It’s going to be a rough 15 minutes,” Walker said. “It will be a dogfight both ways and we understand that. When we have to play that game, we’ll be prepared and ready to go.”
