Delaware State University baseball team takes two over Coppin State

Delaware State earned two victories over Coppin State in MEAC North baseball game on Saturday to run its winning streak to a season-high four straight games.

The Hornets posted an 8-5 win over the Eagles in the completion of a game suspended on Friday before rallying for a 7-5 victory in the regularly scheduled contest.

Mike Worthington and Tripp Kimmell (Milford) each had two hits and two RBI, while Polytech High grads Miguel Rivera and Cole Garey collected two hits and an RBI to lead the Hornets’ 11-hit attack in the opener.

DSU (0-3 MEAC North, 9-12 overall) trailed 5-3 before closing out the scoring with five unanswered runs over the last four innings. Kimmell’s two-run double in the sixth gave DSU a 7-5 lead.

Hornet relievers Hiram Davis (Dover) and Chandler Fitzgerald combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings.

Delaware State trailed 5-3 in the second game before putting four runs on the board in the sixth.

Jared Gillis (Smyrna) doubled in the first run of the inning. Three batters later, Rivera slugged a home run to give the Hornets a 7-5 lead.

Freshman Ryan Rigby (Caesar Rodney) threw four scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking just one, to earn his first collegiate win.

Wesley earns split: Cole Davis scattered seven hits and struck out seven as Wesley College downed Marymount, 6-1, in an Atlantic East contest on Saturday.

The Saints took the nightcap, 15-2.

Jacob Meisel went 4-for-4 with five RBI in the Wolverines’ win, putting Wesley ahead for good with a three-run double in the third.

Softball

Delaware 17, Towson 2: The Blue Hens swept Towson in a three-game series for the first time since 2013, while their 15-run margin of victory is the largest in a CAA game in program history.

Halle Kisamore finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and five RBI, while Emily Blum was also 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBI. Brittney Mendoza had three hits with a double and three RBI, while Lexi Moore (Smyrna) added two hits and drove home a run.

Emily Winburn improved to 9-0 after allowing two runs on six hits in four innings.

Hornets drop two: Albany took a doubleheader from Delaware State, 13-2 and 15-6, to complete a four-game series sweep of the Hornets.

In the opener, the Hornets trailed 1-0 before scoring two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jasmine Melgoza and a single by Jonah Cunnigan.

Melgoza had two hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap for Delaware State (8-16).

Men’s soccer

Immaculata 2, Wesley 0: The Wolverines lost on Saturday night to finish their final season at 1-3-1.

Drexel 4, Delaware 1: The Dragons advanced to next week’s CAA tournament while the Blue Hens, who lost for the first time this spring, end their season with a 2-1-2 record.

College field hockey

William & Mary 2, Delaware 0: The Tribe tallied a goal in the first and third quarters before handing the Blue Hens (2-2) the CAA loss.

College golf

Hens third in CAAs: The Delaware women’s golf team sits in third place while freshman Oihana Etxezarreta is tied for fourth following Sunday’s opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

The Blue Hens fired a 314 score to finish the day in third place out of seven squads. James Madison leads the field at 302.

High school baseball

Sussex Tech 11, Salesianum 1: Grant Allen gave up only four hits and a run while striking out six in the Ravens’ win on Saturday.

Sussex Tech (5-0), which broke the game open with a six-run fifth, was also led by Landon Ruark, who had two hits, reached base four times and drove in four runs. Reliever Alex Adams retired the Sals in order in the seventh.

Boys’ lacrosse

Newark Charter 11, Smyrna 9: Jason Zeitler netted six goals in the Eagles’ loss on Saturday.

Smyrna (3-3) fell behind 5-2 at halftime before coming up short.
