DOVER — In a case police described as “troubling,” a 14-year-old Dover youth was arrested Wednesday after investigation into a Dec. 10 alleged shooting that wounded a teenager.

The Dover Police Department said Deontray Watson, of the 100 block of Periwinkle Drive, came to the police station with his mother and was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangering (four counts), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, criminal mischief and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

The Watson teen was taken to the William Marion Stevenson House Detention Center for juveniles in Dover in default of $14,250 secured bond.

The arrest stemmed from investigation into an apparent late afternoon shooting of a 16-year-old male in the Hamlet development, on Village Drive, police said. According to authorities the alleged vicitim was treated at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover for a single gunshot to the shoulder and released.

Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said that for an alleged gun violence issue, the arrest involved “probably one of the youngest people, perhaps the youngest, but there’s no record of it.”

According to Cpl. Hoffman, the situation was “unusual and of great concern. Obviously we want to know how and why he had a gun in the first place, but to resort to gun violence at the young age of 14 is troubling.”

According to police, officers were called to the scene of possible shots fired at approximately 4:08 p.m. A check of the area found no evidence of a shooting or a victim, police said. Approximately three hours later, according to authorities, a wounded teen arrived at Kent General Hospital seeking treatment.

Police said investigation found four people were in the vicinity of the alleged shooting,

Witness cooperation was a key to investigating the case, police said. No weapon has been found, though undisclosed physical evidence was recovered, according to authorities.

“I believe (this arrest) proves that we have quality detectives serving the city of Dover and with the help of witnesses, we can arrest suspects quickly and solve more cases,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

Police would not disclose a possible motive or connection between anyone involved, and were unsure how many shots were believed to be fired.
