DOVER - The Dover Police Department said its third annual Holiday Heroes shopping event benefited 33 children this year.
Wednesday night’s gathering at Target was the biggest in the program’s history, police said, with several local businesses and organizations pitching in as well. Dover Police partnered with Communities in Schools and the Capital School District to identify children in need. The Dover Police Department secured nearly $5,000 in donations.
The department raised almost $1,500 through online and personal fundraising efforts. Local businesses contributed $4,500, the department said, along with radio station coverage.
While 23 children took part in Wednesday’s event, additional funds were provided to a family with five children with another five going shopping Monday.
