DOVER — A man received an 18-month prison sentence Tuesday after pleading guilty to a 2016 burglary in Dover, officials said.

Hakeem Leonard was immediately sentenced in Kent County Superior Court and also received a year of probation after the prison term. Judge Robert B. Young rendered the sentence.

According to Dover Police at the time, Mr. Leonard allegedly forced his way through a residential bedroom window in the 100 block of Willis Road on April 17, fired several shots and wounded a 22-year-old man in the chest. The wounded man was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover in stable condition.

Authorities said Leonard, then 24, was arrested at the Bayhealth-Kent General in Dover while receiving treatment for injuries he sustained in the alleged incident. He was then committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of a $100,100 secured bond.

Leonard was initially charged with home invasion, first-degree assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and criminal mischief.

Deputy Attorney General Lindsay Taylor prosecuted the case.
