DOVER — A Dover man was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to felonies in connection with a reported shooting in January 2015.

James A. Wheeler admitted to first-degree assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and received minimum mandatory incarceration terms on both, to be served consecutively.

In Kent County Superior Court, Resident Judge William L. Witham Jr. gave Wheeler 25 years for the assault count, suspended after two years. Six months of Level IV custody were ordered to follow, either through home confinement or work release, followed by 18 months of Level III probation.

Regarding the firearms charge, Mr. Wheeler received 25 years, suspended after three.

Wheeler’s effective date of time served began on March 18, 2015, when authorities said he was arrested by the Delaware State Police after being shot himself in the lower torso two days earlier in the Rodney Village neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Wheeler described himself as a victim in the shooting and said he had recovered from the wounds and was no longer undergoing any treatment.

Wheeler was 25 at the time of the reported shooting.
