KEYS TO THE GAME: For Delaware, it’s come to this. After starting the season ranked fifth in FCS, the Blue Hens have to beat winless Dixie State just to snap a three-game losing streak and get back to .500. And if Delaware doesn’t beat the Trailblazers, who are in their first full season as an FCS program, the Hens’ fans would be stunned. ... The trouble is, because it has played a difficult schedule, Dixie State is probably better than its record. Nothing is coming easy for Delaware’s offense right now, either. Probably the best thing that could happen for the Hens is for their offense to have some early success. Delaware has scored only three touchdowns in its last two games. The Hens have also tallied just one first-quarter TD all season — and that was in the season opener at Maine. ... Until Delaware finds a way to score more points, its margin for error is going to remain very small. That’s why the mistakes the Hens make are so magnified. While Delaware’s defense has played well, it has also given up at one big scoring play per game. That’s a trend it would like to end.
NOTES: Coming off his big 15-tackle game against JMU, safety Kedrick Whitehead now leads Delaware with 45 tackles. The Middletown High grad also has six pass breakups. ... Cornerback Justis Henley also has six pass breakups. ... Senior receiver Gene Coleman said he has been invited to the FCS Bowl, an all-star game being played on Dec. 12 in Daytona Beach. Fla. ... Dixie State is the first team from Utah that the Hens have ever played. The Trailblazers’ road trip will cover 4,664 miles and the game will be only the second that they’ve played east of the Mississippi. ... Delaware kicker Ryan Coe is a combined 24-of-25 place kicks this season (PATs/FGs) ... The Trailblazers have given up 29 QB sacks. ... Delaware plays its third straight home game next Saturday when it hosts William & Mary at 1 p.m.
