EASLEY, S.C. – Kent County’s District I all-stars overcame an early two-run deficit to down Michigan, 4-2, in the opening game of the Big League baseball World Series on Tuesday afternoon.

The U.S. East champions scored twice in the fourth inning and one run in both the fifth and sixth as the nine-team, double-elimination tournament got underway.

Michigan, the Central champion, loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. But reliever Sean Hanhauser of Dover got a strikeout and, after a lightning delay, then a groundout to get out of the jam.

The Polytech High grad then set Michigan down in order in the seventh to seal the victory. Hanhauser retired all five batters he faced, with two strikeouts.

Hanhauser also had an RBI single at the plate. Smyrna-Clayton’s John Barkley, who pitched 1.1 shutout innings, earned the win.

Dover’s Dakota Graham and Tevin Thomas along with Milford’s Thomas Jordan all had RBI in the contest.

District I plays again on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when it faces U.S. Southwest champion Texas, which had a first-round bye.
