Democracy in action

I was glad to hear that Kent and Sussex County high school juniors participated in the Kent County Levy Court’s Youth in Government Day. Exposing students to government processes is an excellent way to introduce them to the plethora of ways they can carry out their civic responsibility. It also serves as a reminder for those of us who have fallen behind in our political participation. We shouldn’t wait for the polls to inform our representatives and senators of our opinions. Delawareans possess a unique opportunity to influence foreign aid policy. Sen. Coons is a member of the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Subcommittee; he plays a key role in deciding how much funding is appropriated to fight global health crises. Tuberculosis, a disease that killed 1.6 million people in 2017, is lacking crucial funding. Contact Sen. Coons and inform him that you support a funding increase to $450 million in 2020. Democracy should be a constant conversation between representatives and constituents. All you have to do is chime in. You might even help save lives.
