DOVER — Delaware public health officials say the death toll from flu has risen to 28, tying the record total from three years ago.

Officials told the Associated Press Monday the most recently reported deaths involved New Castle County residents with underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, officials say the number of confirmed flu cases appears to be leveling off.

There were 893 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases for the week ending Feb. 24, a sharp drop from the record 1,521 cases reported the previous week.

The new cases bring this season’s flu total to 6,674, the highest number since record-keeping began in the 2004-2005 season.
