BEAR — Police are investigating the shooting death of a 19-year-old Delaware State University student while he drove to work early Saturday.
Malcolm Evans, of the 600 block of Country Path Drive in the Rutledge neighborhood, was shot once in the upper body and died from his injuries at 2:14 p.m. Sunday at Christiana Medical Center, New Castle County Police said.
Delaware State Police were initially called to the scene at 4 a.m. to investigate a single-vehicle accident at the entrance to Rutledge and found evidence consistent with a shooting in the unit block of Baywatch Road.
New Castle County Police were then called to the scene at approximately 5 a.m. as it was determined that the incident occurred in Rutledge.
During the course of the investigation, police said, detectives learned Mr. Evans lost control of the vehicle after he was shot and it crashed. A witness observed several males in the immediate area, but they fled prior to emergency personnel arriving.
