DOVER — The Kent County-based Delaware Nightmare placed second in the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships, 14 and under, intermediate division this past weekend.

The event was held in Cayce, South Carolina.

After winning four matches to advance to the finals, the Delaware team was downed by the Caribbean Division team, Pirate Squad, from Puerto Rico. Pirate Squad beat the Nightmare, three matches to two, with an overall score of 53–38 in games.

Both of the matches won by the Delaware team were decided with a tie-breaker, as was one of the matches won by the Caribbean team.

“These are the best results we have ever had,” said Delaware coach Gaby Brengle. “I am so proud of these kids. They worked really hard for this and we also had lots of fun.”

Last year the Delaware Nightmare finished ninth out of the 16 teams that represent different regions throughout the U.S. The Nightmare won the right to represent the Middle States section by beating opponents from Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the July sectional championships.

Members of the team and the events they competed in are:

Girls’ singles: Victoria Anyanwu, 14, Dover, Dover High School

Boys’ singles: Collin Bowers, 13, Townsend, Everett Middle School

Girls’ doubles: Allaire Berl, 13, Middletown, St. Anne’s Episcopal School

Erika Synoski, 13, Dover, Central Middle School

Boys’ doubles: Alex Savich, 14, Clayton, Smyrna High

Darin Jawahar, 12, Dover, Postlethwait Middle School

Mixed Doubles: Bea Manjon, 14, Camden, Holy Cross School

Garrett Wrede, 14, Dover, Caesar Rodney High

Both Bowers and Anyanwu went undefeated in the tournament.

To earn its place in the tourney finals, the Nightmare beat:

Northern Division Team (Team BLS from Minnesota) 3-2, 48-24 in games.

Southern California (Team Southern Aces G6) 5-0, 60-11.

Texas (Spring Branch Tennis Center) 5–0, 60–7.

Northern California (Willow Glen) 3–2, 42-38 .
