FREDERICA — The dead-on scoring accuracy of Joshua Cosden and the all-around hustling play of Jacob Copio helped take the Caesar Rodney High School boys lacrosse team to a place that it had never been to.

Cosden, a junior attack, scored six goals and had two assists and Copio, a senior attack, chipped in with three goals and six assists to spark the Riders to a 19-2 rout of Milford in the Henlopen Conference championship game Friday night.

It was the first time Northern Division champion CR (12-4 overall) has captured the Henlopen Conference championship game, though it won several Henlopen titles in the years prior to having a game between the Northern and Southern Division winners.

They celebrated at the end of the night by posing for pictures with the championship trophy at the brand new DE Turf sports complex, which attracted a nice crowd.

“It’s a very big win,” Caesar Rodney coach Matt Faircloth said. “Being able to have this Henlopen Conference championship is something that none of these kids have been a part of.

“The last time that we won a Henlopen Conference championship was before they had the title game, but none of these guys were here.”

The Riders came out fast and furious against a Milford team that played Polytech on Thursday.

Cosden and Noah Longest notched two goals apiece in the opening quarter to stake the Riders to a quick 6-1 lead.

Cosden had scored all six of his goals by halftime and Copio had all three of his as CR raced out to a 13-1 lead in the first half.

“We practiced hard last week and we all came out and just passed the ball, moved the ball and put in the back of the net,” Cosden said. “We took great shots, shared it, and we all came together and just played as a team.

“This shows definitely what we can do and how we can do it. It shows how good of execution that we have and it just boosts us.”

Cohen Bonneville and Conor Christie scored the lone goals for Southern Division champion Milford (9-7), which had a tough time penetrating CR goaltender Tyler Gross.

Blake Faulkner, the Buccaneers’ coach, said he was proud of how far his team has come over the past couple of years. They have won two of the last three South titles.

“I don’t think it’s as tough (a loss) as people think,” Faulkner said. “We did play a game (Thursday) and had to play back-to-back. Plus, there’s a big numbers discrepancy between what Caesar Rodney is able to pull from and what Milford is able to pull from.

“I think the big part of that is our kids tried hard, they played their absolute butts off and I couldn’t be prouder of our group. Whoever we draw (for the state tournament) we have a couple of days to kind of rest and heal and we’ll take whatever we can get.”

Faircloth was equally excited for his team, which entered the game having lost two of its last three contests

“These seniors have worked really hard for this and it was one of the goals that they set for themselves this year and they were able to accomplish it,” he said. “I’m proud of them.”
