DOVER — Ben Knapp and his family are looking forward to another Cougars for a Cause 5K Run/Walk to benefit Ben’s medical fund on Saturday.
The event will be held in the area around Dover’s Campus Community School, with the race starting at 9 a.m.
Registration is being held now through Thursday at 6 p.m. at TriSportsEvents.com. Contact Ray at 302-674-3213 or email Races4u@TriSportsEvents.com for more information.
This will be the fourth 5K that Campus Community School has sponsored for Ben.
Since suffering a hypoxic brain injury on Oct. 21, 2011, the 21-year-old Dover resident has continued to fight to regain basic life functions such as moving on his own and communicating with others. He is still involved in outpatient therapies when he isn’t attending college classes at Wesley College.
Despite his slow recovery, Ben flashes his winning smile and draws people in with his personality, which remains the same.
Family friend, Michelle Cote, continues to help with Ben’s rehabilitation.
“Ben is an incredible person,” she said. “I have never met anyone with more heart, determination and spirit.
“When you meet him, you are forever changed and you realize how lucky you are to know him. Most of us cannot imagine our lives without him in it and we feel blessed to be on the journey of his recovery.”
This year, the Knapps will be using the funds raised to help purchase a handicapped accessible van that will allow the entire family and a caregiver/nurse to travel with Ben.
“We try to give Ben as normal a life as he had before, going places with his family and experiencing new things,” said Ben’s mother, Cindy Knapp.
“We have a saying in our home, ‘Don’t quit five minutes before the miracle,’ and that is how we live each day with Ben.
“We don’t know why this happened but we do know that Ben has made a difference in the lives of others and someday this will all make sense to us. In the meantime, please help Ben to continue on his road to recovery by supporting the 5K on Saturday, May 14.”
