Delaware State’s defense took advantage of a short-handed offense to gain the upper hand in the Hornets’ Red-White football scrimmage at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The situational offense vs. defense session marked the end of DSU’s 15-session spring camp.

On the first series of plays in the scrimmage, linebacker Malik Harris scooped up a fumble on a mishandled snap by the offense and scampered 25 yards to the end zone to set the tone for the defense.

The defense also recorded two interceptions, including one on a leaping one-handed grab by outside linebacker Kameron Rogers.

The Hornet offense scrimmaged without projected starters Mike Waters (RB) receivers Mason Rutherford and Fatu Sua-Godinet, along with tackle Joshua Fala.

Despite the missing players and lack of depth along the front line, the offense had some success in the scrimmage, particularly the connection between quarterback Keenan Black and tight end Isaiah Williams.

“I think we made progress throughout camp, but there’s a lot we need to work on,” said Black, a sophomore who took the majority of snaps this spring. “We certainly missed some key guys on offense, but the defense put a lot of pressure on us today.”

Black is expected to battle with Shayne Smith, along with incoming freshmen Jack McDaniel and Nasir Boykins for the starting quarterback spot when summer camp begins in August.

“All I can do is continue to study, work out and develop even better chemistry with our receivers to prepare for summer camp,” Black said.

Baseball

Delaware State 19, Norfolk State 3: Freshman Ciaran Devenney had a grand slam and a career-high six RBI, while Jaylen Zielecki had a grand slam and five RBI to power the Hornets.

Freshman Jared Gillis (Smyrna) also smacked a three-run homer to help highlight the Hornets’ season-high scoring outburst. Delaware State (5-5 MEAC North) scored in each inning while division leader Norfolk State fell to 7-3, with each of its losses coming to the Hornets.

DSU’s run total was its most since a 19-10 victory, also against Norfolk State, on April 6, 2014.

Winning pitcher Lane DeLeon (2-2) allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out seven.

Wesley posts sweep: Powered by a seven-run seventh inning and a quality start from Sam Meck, Wesley downed No. 23 Christopher Newport, 6-3, in the first game of a CAC doubleheader.

The Wolverines then won the nightcap, 8-5, to complete the sweep.

In the first game, Mike Calvarese (3-for-4) and Aaron Briggs (Caesar Rodney) smacked back-to-back homers to left field to cap the big inning. Meck went 7.1 innings, striking out five while giving up seven hits, three runs and three walks to win his sixth game of the season.

Chris Seibert (3-for-5, 4 RBI) crushed two homers in the nightcap while pitcher Cody Simet worked eight innings to earn his third win for Wesley (15-11, 7-8 CAC).

Northeastern 7, Delaware 4: The Blue Hens (16-13, 4-4 CAA) went 0-for-7 with the bases loaded and just 2-for-13 (.154) with runners in scoring position in suffering the CAA loss.

Leftfielder Jordan Glover collected two hits for Delaware while designated hitter Doug Trimble knocked in two runs and first baseman Nick Patten hit a solo home run in the fourth inning.

College lacrosse

MEN, Hofstra 11, Delaware 9: The Blue Hens’ upset bid fell just short as they pulled to within one goal early in the fourth but could not complete the comeback against the No. 4 Pride.

Delaware got three goals each from senior Steve DeLargy and sophomore Andrew Romagnoli and freshman Crosby Matthews won 15 of 22 faceoffs, but it wasn’t enough as the Hens (7-4, 0-2 CAA) lost their second straight.

Hofstra (10-0, 2-0 CAA), the only remaining unbeaten Division I team in the country, has now defeated the Hens seven straight times since Delaware’s last win in the 2011 CAA Tournament

Christopher Newport 19, Wesley 4: Wolverines goalie James Cella stopped a season-high 26 shots in the loss.

Josh Wassum, Zach Farnell, Nich Bruhn and Will Fingles each tallied a goal for Wesley.

WOMEN, Christopher Newport 19, Wesley 2: Maddison Cypher and Brianna Bacon each netted a goal for the Wolverines in the loss while Shelby Schirmer made 13 stops.

College softball

Wesley earns split: Wesley powered over Mary Washington, 9-3, before dropping the nightcap, 9-4.

Nina Marcano propelled Wesley (17-13, 3-7 CAC) to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she cracked a three-run homer over the center field fence. Pitcher Lindsay Siok (Milford) earned her CAC-leading 13th win by picking up her 10th complete game of the season.

Hens drop two in CAA: Delaware’s seventh-inning rally in the nightcap fell just short as the Blue Hens dropped a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader to Hofstra, 8-0 and 6-5.

Delaware (16-16, 4-4 CAA) got a three-run homer from Anna Steinmetz in the nightcap. The longball was the 24th of her career, setting a school record.

College track & field

Hillman wins twice for Hens: The Delaware women’s outdoor track & field squad dominated the action at the Delaware Open as the Blue Hens won 10 events.

Delaware picked up 197 total points, easily outdistancing runner-up Towson (66) in the 15-team field. On the men’s side, Salisbury won the team title with 124 points to outdistance Wesley, Stockton, Delaware State, St. Peter’s, and Monroe in the 14-team field.

The Blue Hens had four multiple winners on the day as Polytech High grad Sarah Hillman won the shot put (47-1.5) and discus (171-6), Isis Pinkney won the 100 meters (12.11) and ran a leg of the winning 400-meter relay (48.14), Carly Pettipaw won the 800 meters (2:18.14) and ran a leg of the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team (3:56.88), and London Freeland won the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.21) and 1,600-meter relay.
