Some Kent County products are off to strong starts to their college careers on the diamond.
Jake Williams, a freshman at Lebanon Valley College and a Caesar Rodney High grad, earned his first collegiate victory in style this past week. Williams tossed a complete game while striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing just one earned run as the Dutchman defeated Muhlenberg 9-2 on Tuesday.
Kendall Small from Dover High has started a hot streak for Wilmington University. Small has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and has 12 hits in his last 29 at-bats (.414 batting average over that time span). On the season, Small also has four runs and four RBIs for the Wildcats.
At Delaware State, Milford High product Cole Davis has struck out nine batters in his last four and a third innings.
Meanwhile in softball, two of last year’s top Henlopen Conference pitchers have carried their success over to the college level.
Polytech grad Shaina Reed has a 13-3 record in 19 appearances for Florida State Jacksonville. Reed has thrown 96.1 innings, struck out 106 and has an earned run average of 1.38.
Regan Green, from Laurel High, has appeared in 17 games for Mississippi State in her debut season. She has recorded three shutouts, five victories, 69 strikeouts and holds an earned run average of 1.06.
Hornet bowlers earn top seed
Delaware State is off to a hot start in the 2016 MEAC Championship. The Hornets posted a 5-0 record and topped all teams with a total pinfall of 4,702 in Friday’s qualifying round to earn the No. 1 seed in bracket play, which begins today.
DSU will face No. 8 seed Florida A&M Saturday (Mar. 26) at 9 a.m. in its opening bracket play best-of-seven Baker series match. The winner will face No. 4 Howard or No. 5 Bethune-Cookman in the next round of the double-elimination tournament.
In Friday’s qualifying round, the Hornets defeated Bethune-Cookman (921-882), Norfolk State (903-812), N.C. A&T (963-872), Florida A&M (1011-862) and Morgan State (904-806).
The MEAC bowling championship wraps up on Sunday with the championship final at 12 p.m. The championship match will be televised via tape-delay on ESPNU April 3 at 11 p.m.
Wesley hosts inaugural track and field meet
The Wesley College Men’s and Women’s track and field teams began their spring season by hosting the program’s first official track meet named the Wesley Wolverine Early Bird Meet. The meet was used as an intrasquad competition, but all results were official.
DaJahn Lowery swept the springs, putting up a 10.80 in the 100m and a 21.96 in the 200m. Nick Stenderowicz earned the win in the 400m with a finish of 49.90. Jamier Bailey took down the 800m and the 1500m. Bailey finished with a time of 2:06.58 in the 800 and a 4:22.59 in the 1500. In the 400m hurdles, Henry Miller took first with a 58.21 mark. Miller also won the high jump with a 1.83m leap. The Wolverines 4x100 relay team comprised of De’Vaughn Trader, Lowery, Darius Taylor, and Vicco Bedell ran a 42.76.
In the field, Patrick Schlosser earned wins in the pole vault (10-06.00) and the discus throw (137-03.50). Trader took first in both the long jump (22-00.00) and the triple jump (41-08.50). Kyle Smith finished first in the shot put with a heave of 43-08.00.
Evelina Sloboh finished first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.13. Elizsha Streeter took the top finish in the 200m with a 25.14 mark. In the 400m, Briana Artis edged Quadira Minus by 0.03 seconds to finish first with a 58.81. Dieunise Desir solidified her spot as the Wolverines’ top distance runner with wins in the 800m (2:29.00) and the 1500m (5:13.35). Ashley Morris won the 100m Hurdles with a 15.56 and Sonyel Williams took the 400m hurdles with a 1:08.98. The 4x100m relay team of Streeter, Sloboh, Alexia Mitchell, and Angel Hall finished in 48.29.
In the field, Jourdyn Beverly continued as Wesley’s top thrower reaching 37-00.00 with the shot put and 107-04 with the discus. Monshea Newsome-Murray made an impressive debut, sweeping all three jumps. The freshman cleared 1.42m in the high jump, earned a mark of 17-04.25 in the long jump and set a new program record on her first ever collegiate triple jump with a 37-02.00. Newsome-Murray’s leap smashed the old record by nearly two feet.
