The Wesley College women’s basketball team held off Arcadia in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to earn a 71-63 on Sunday afternoon.

Tiyanna Gibbs led Wesley (4-1) with her second double-double of the season, recording 17 points and 12 rebounds. Monshea Newsome-Murray added 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists while Alexus Stroud (Smyrna) came off the bench for 15 points.

Brionna Johnson (Smyrna) added nine points and nine rebounds as the Wolverines earned their third straight victory. Wesley drilled seven three-point shots and outrebounded the Knights, 51-34.

Arcadia threatened in the final two minutes. cutting the Wesley lead to 61-59 with 2:53 left. But Stroud sank a three-pointer on the following Wolverines’ possession and Wesley closed out the game going 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

Detroit Mercy 66, Delaware 64: Down by as many as 26 points midway through the third quarter, Delaware rallied to tie the contest only to fall at the end.

The contest was played late Saturday in Northridge, California.

The Hens held Detroit Mercy to just four free throws in the fourth quarter, including two with 23 seconds left, as the Titans claimed the victory in the final game of the CSUN Thanksgiving Classic.

First-half woes thwarted Delaware for the second straight game as Detroit Mercy (3-3) held a 42-23 advantage at halftime. But the Blue Hens (4-2) outscored the Titans, 20-4, over the final 14:48 of the contest.

Redshirt junior Sadé Chatman led the Hens with 13 points and 10 rebounds while senior Erika Brown and sophomore Nicole Enabosi each collected 11 points.

MEN, Delaware 84, Bryan Athyn 51: Playing at home for the first time in over two weeks, the Blue Hens reached season-highs in points, assists, and field goal percentage in beating the Division II program.

The Hens (4-3) snapped a two-game losing streak as four Delaware players scored in double figures, seven had four or more rebounds, and six had two or more assists.

Delaware shot a season-best 58.6 percent from the field (34-of-58), knocked down 9-of-22 three-pointers, dished out 21 assists, and committed just nine turnovers for the game. Nine different players scored and no one saw more than 27 minutes of action in the balanced effort.

It was Delaware’s largest margin of victory since a 75-40 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison on Jan. 15, 2005. Delaware also shot over 58 percent from the field and had single digits in turnovers for the first time since a 92-73 win over Drexel nearly 25 years ago (March 3, 1993).

Sophomore guard Chivarsky Corbett led the Hens with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field while Skye Johnson made all seven of his shots from the field and finished with 14 points,

Darian Bryant added 13 points, and Cazmon Hayes chipped in with 11 points and four assists.

American 75, Wesley 65: The Wolverines could not overcome an 11-point halftime deficit as they fell to Catholic.

Paul Clemons led four Wolverines in double-figures with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Brian Cameron finished with 15 points while Rasahn Brinkley and J.W. Lawson each scored 12 points.

Wesley (1-3) shot just 4-for-16 from beyond the arc, tying the fewest threes in a game this season.

The Cardinals opened up a 25-12 lead in the first half, but the Wolverines came battling back from the deficit with a 13-0 run to tie the game. Rasahn Brinkley drilled a pair of mid-range jumpers and Cameron added two threes and a pair of foul shots,

In the second half, the Wolverines cut the deficit to single digits on a Clemons jumper that made it 61-53 with 6:59 to go but that was as close as the they could get.
