DOVER — Gov. John Carney on Tuesday signed an executive order creating a council designed to assist Delaware families by working with different state departments, nonprofits and businesses.

The Family Services Cabinet Council, first created under Gov. Tom Carper in the 1990s, is tasked with helping services run more efficiently, according to the governor.

“Our challenge is to determine whether the programs and services we offer are effective in moving families out of poverty, improving our system of education and creating opportunities for all Delaware families to succeed,” Gov. Carney said in a statement.

“That requires all of us — government agencies, nonprofits and private business — to work together. That also requires that we measure our progress.

The reestablishment of the Family Services Cabinet Council will help us do just that, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of Delaware families.”

The council will specifically focus on substance abuse treatment, early childhood education and recidivism, among similar areas.

It will be chaired by Gov. Carney and include the heads of the Health, Education, Labor, Safety and Correction departments, as well as the Office of Management and Budget and the Delaware State Housing Authority.

The executive order is the fifth the governor has issued since taking office Jan. 17.
