DOVER — The Capital School District Board of Education appointed a new board member Tuesday night.
She is Nauleen Perry, the registrar at Delaware Technical Community College in Dover, who will fill Brian Lewis’ seat on the school board.
The board also approved Tuesday a new principal, Julie Giangiulio, for East Dover Elementary School.
Mr. Lewis, whose term was to expire next June 30, stepped down early when he ran for Dover city council. The district received his resignation before he was sworn into council in May.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Shelton said that choosing a new board member was a tough call, but in the end, Ms. Perry stood out.
“We had nine people apply for the position … the board members spent a great deal of time talking through the different candidates,” he said.
The new East Dover Elementary principal, Ms. Giangiulio, was formerly principal of West Seaford Elementary School. Before moving to West Elementary, she was assistant principal at Blades Elementary School in the Seaford School District and was a principal in residence at Brookside Elementary in the Christina School District.
She was also a kindergarten teacher for eight years in the Appoquinmink School District. She graduated from the Delaware Leadership Project and obtained her master’s in reading and her bachelor’s degree in early care and education from Wilmington University.
The board was set to vote on an assistant superintendent Wednesday night after former assistant superintendent Sandy Spangler retired in June.
